the top of my water pump has a leak and it leaks down into a little gully on the water pump and creates a lil puddle. my question is if the gaskets are hard to replace and how much it costs. I have one more question. The water pump bolts on to some other thing and that thing that bolts on to the motor thats the gasket leaking, is that part of the water pump?

The water pump gasket isn't too hard to replace. It is just a matter or removing the belt, then removing the water pump.

The biggest thing is to make sure you get ALL the old gasket off.

One more thing to consider, is depending on the age of the water pump...you should replace that too.

The front engine cover, covers the timing chain, is what the water pump bolts to.

That's a little more involved to replace...

Like earley said, it's rather easy. A tip to getting all of the gasket off is to first use a putty knife or a razor blade then take a light grit sand paper or a wire brush and get it all off. Some chemicals like xylene will help too.

there are a few things you neeed to remove: fan shroud, then the fan, then the belt, and you need to unbolt the p/s and a/c bracket, dont take any lines off, just pull them to the side out of the way.

after you get the water pump off and get ALL the gasket material off then you can start putting it back together.

if i were you i would go to NAPA and buy a new water pump and a can of "indian head shellac" and cover both sides of the gasket with the befor you put it on. you may want to get some new bolts when you put it back on, instead of taking a risk of breaking one off in the engine.

after the pump is back on you may want to hood the rad. hoses back up befor you put the fan and the rest of the brackets back on, and put some antifreeze in it just to make sure its not leaking. befor you get it all back together and realize you gotta take it all back apart, lol

Apparently my ex-husband made that mistake.

On the SNs you don't have to remove the fan shroud or any of the brackets. You don't even have to take the pulley off the pump. It's just like 8 bolts or so on on the water pumps. The whole job can be done in half an hour. It's just about the easiest water pump gasket change there is.
