water temp sensor

how many wires are going to the water temp. sensor

I dont know exactly how many wires it is...I thought it was just a plug in??? I changed mine awhile back, the car wouldnt even start without it and somehow i got it to start and there was clouds of black smoke

well the reason i ask is because i got the car without a motor and i put my carbed engine in there, a 5.0 that is. so i wanna know how many wires and what color they are.
