Ways of getting more power.

How many hours did the PI headswap take you
to get it done Canadastang?
It took me 10 hours from start to finish including changing the oil and tapping tthe cross-over, but working on engines is what I do everyday as co-owner of an engine rebuilding business. I'd suggest taking the sensor and cross-over to a machine shop to have them tap it for you, the $20 bucks or so they would charge is well worth it. Also label everything as you unplug and/or remove it. What works well is labeling the first connector #1 and the sensor it was plugged into as #1, then the next #2 and so on and even drawing little diagrams if you have to. It takes a little longer as you go but it's well worth the trouble when you put it back together again. Don't rush, take your time and if you get frustrated just take a break, it's a lot better to go slow and do it once than to go fast and have to pull it apart again :D

One thing that you may want to do is do some research and find out exactly how strict the smog regulations are were you live, it would be nice to talk to someone in you area who has done the swap to see how they made out. If they are really strict the headswap may cause you to fail the smog test as although it's fine for the 99' up Stangs it still might be more than what your 96' was originally. California for instance is very very strict.

From what I was told from people that did the swap in the past that
it took about 10-14 hours of labor to do it.Also having someone tap the
second temp sensor would be a great idea I agree. My smog laws are honestly
not every strict as to Califorina that is very strict geeezz the folks in Califorina can't even pass smog if they change their mid pipe. :nonono:

If you get the Dorman PI intake, it already has 2 holes on the crossover.

I also see that nobody has said anything about the PI cams/intake swap. That will put you about 5hp away from the 99+ cars. There is only about a 15-20hp difference between the headswap vs cam/intake swap, and most of that is due to the compression jump. And you will still be able to sc down the road if you want.

Check out the T-Bird forums there are alot of guys over there with great NPI #'s. Just becareful if you post something, Some over there don't like Mustang ppl....

Are you serious? The Dorman PI intake for the 99+ PI cars really
has two holes for the coolant temp sensors? I thought it only had
one hole because the 99+ cars only have one coolant temp sensor?

I don't think so, the non-pi one does but well, you already have one of those. You may however be able to buy the aluminum cross-over from them
It might be a good idea to check them out anyway as I could be wrong.

I have sold about 10-12 of these in the last year, and every one that Ive seen had both ports in the cross-over.
Hell, the first day we started stocking them I was opening the box checking it out.:D

I'll take my camera to work tomorrow and take a pic of it. My bet is that Dorman uses the same cross-over on both intakes (PI and NPI)

Take some pics and post them if you can that would be cool.
Also give me the phone number or site where one could possibly
be had.

I'll get some pic tomorrow. You can buy Dorman parts at O'Reillys, Advance, should be able too at any parts store. Dorman parts have been around for years and are good products.

like someone already said, PI swap and VT1 cams, and a Procharger.

passing visual is the hard part of smog(if youre in cali, etc). a Procharger setup is smog legal, theyre not going to be able to know the difference in pi/npi, nor will the cams screw you over unless youre running catless.

smog laws are so stupid. most modded cars, when running a cat, will still pass emissions, i dont understand why if a car passes emissions, whats it matter whats done to it?

The PI cams and intake are a real good "bang-for-the-buck" IF you do the install yourself. I used the Anderson FMS cam-changing tool to expedite the cam swap. It helped a lot. However, if you do the cams you should also do the intake since that seems to be the bottleneck. If I were to choose, I would do the intake first and then see how you like it. Cams and heads can be done later.

I only installed the PI cams and PI intake since I plan to eventually go FI. My dyno numbers were at 200 rwhp, which seems very low but it needs to be dyno-tuned. The power definitely increased from the 2500-5500 rpm's, but low end torque slightly decreased. A used Hypertech tuner seems to have given me a few more horsies and slightly better mileage (no dyno #'s yet). Overall, the car runs well and I'm happy with the cheap mods.

Yip, the cross-over is the same for the PI and the non-PI intakes.
