Weird Bang Sound Coming From Rear?

To start, I have 3:73's and I just got my trac-lok rebuilt about a month ago. I haven't had any problems until last night. I was sitting at a stop sign on an slightly inclined type of road. As I was waiting, I drifted backwards a little and I sorted did a 3500 RPM rev with a quick clutch let off and as soon as the clutch engaged, I heard a very loud bang sound from somewhere in the rear. I thought maybe I drifted back into something but I didn't. Next I thought maybe I blew out the baffles in one of my mufflers, but they seem fine. I took a breath and just contined to drive as normal without noticing any other sounds. I'm thinking it came from the rear, and maybe something snapped. Anyone ever have something happen like this?

I would put it up on some stands and check everything thing out real good. Push , pull and touch everything looking for bent parts or roten bushings. Maybe one of the torque boxes cracked or something. U-joints maybe? I am curious so keep us updated.

Sometimes they tear up easy sometimes they stand up to alot of abuse. I would look there first just to rule them out.

I would think that if you broke something in the rear it would continue to make noise as you drove down the road. Was it just that one loud bang or did it continue to make noise?

I had the exact same thing happen about 2 months ago. Everything drives fine but if I try to spin the tires, I only make one black mark....this has led me to wonder about my traclok. The weird thing about it is...if I jack the car up and spin the back tires they will both spin in the same direction......

I'd like to know what you find out.

I had a similar sound come from the rear in my Jeep. It would do it periodically, then one day it just stopped moving. I drove to work in 4wd and popped the diff cover and discovered all the bolts holding the ring gear had sheared off! I replaced the whole rear-end with that of a 97 Explorer.

Pop the cover, drain the fluid....see if there is any metal inside. Easy to do and will cost you $10 in fluid, I have the ford additive if you need it ;)

TQ boxes are funny at times, seen stock cars rip them, seen 9 sec cars that are fine
