Weird Freeze Plug/Cooling Q.

I installed a Flowtech off-road H in my dad's '95 'vert yesterday to go along with the Summit cat-back I bought him for x-mas(sounds friggin awesome!) After all the troubles I had with breaking header studs and busting an O2 sensor, I finally all went together. I fired it up and revved it up a few times, sounded great, no leaks, all was well. We took it for a spin and got on it a few times, and when we got back, we noticed smoke coming from under the hood. We couldn't figure it out because it went away at idle and only came back when revving the motor.

I looked underneath the car and coolant was dripping steadily from the rear of the motor. Turns out that the freeze plug at the drivers rear of the block was leaking. What really screwed me up was that it had a sensor and a bolt in the freeze plug. The bolt was loose, and had stripped out. I stuck a machine screw with a washer in there as a temporary fix.

Does anyone know what the hell that sensor in the freeze plug is? I've never seen that before. I'm confused.

That's a new one on me. Only thing it could have been is a temp sensor of some kind. Is your dad the original owner? The ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor is on the lower manifold just to the left of the distributor. Soo, I have no clue what that sensor is for.

I'm wondering if it could be a block heater. Someone prolly half-a**ed it by using a bolt to drive the plug back in.

Wow! So, the freeze plug is not a good place to install a temp sensor? I never would have guessed.
