Weirdness with my timing (It's me again).

Ok re-cap. Did a headswap and now i just noticed something weird when she was running.

I did the ole' finger test. Told my dad to put his finger over the #1 cyl hole while i slowly crank over, when his finger pops off he gives me the yell and its at TDC.

I took a look at the balancer and it read an almost perfect 4 degrees advance (0 is TDC so im damn close). I drop the dizzy in with the rotor facing the 1 on the cap. I rotate the dizzy a tad clockwise just to make sure its advanced a couple more degrees before i start. I crank it over and she fires up, i check timing with spout out and it shows me 40 degrees. WTF? ive done this technique before and it works flawlessly. Why is my sh1t showing 40 degrees? Im pretty sure either the pointer or the computer is whack. Has this ever happened to you? BTW no pinging.

How does it run?? I had the same problem after my H/C/I swap. Stab the distrubutor a thousand times and it would backfire and run like sh%^. All I had to do in my case was restab the dist in a diffrent way and fixed her up. When I say restab the dist I mean at TDC and put the TFI part in at a diffrent angle so as to get the timing correct. Anything else that you may have changed or any other info would be helpful.

it runs good, doesnt backfire or make weird exhaust noises.

Its just that it cant idle well which is the vacuum issue.

The timing shows 40 degrees on the light but thats impossible. there has to be a malfunction somewhere because if it was at 40 i wouldnt be able to run it.

It does not take much to grab a ton of extra timing. Since you have a light, how does it run at 14* [set with the SPOUT out]?

Good luck.

i AGREE THAT IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH TO MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE ON TIMING AND IT WILL RUN ON 40*. ALOT OF RACE CARS STAY FULL ADVANCE ALL THE TIME WHICH IS 34-42* RESPECTIVELY. AS FOR A COMPUTER PROBLEM PULLING THE SPOUT CONNECTOR ELIMINATES ALL COMPUTER CONTROL SO THIS WOULD NOT BE THE PROBLEM. IF THE CAR RAN BAD I WOULD SAY THAT YOUR VALVE TIMING WAS OFF BUT SINCE THAT IS NOT THE CASE SOUNDS LIKE THERE IS NO PROBLEM.

You're not using an advance timing light are you? The kind where you can rotate the knob on the back to adjust for different timing settings? I hate those kind. FWIW, it doesn't take much at all to get the timing off by quite a bit. Try it again, by the time your dad yelled to stop, you might have rotated a tad too far.
