Does anyboby know if you can weld through ceramic coating or does it have to be ground off?

The real question is on a pair of MAC LTs. If they are bolted up to the block and I cut some 3/8" steel to bridge between the tubes and welded it, would it work? Anybody try it. I can't be the first person with the idea. Would the coating bubble and pool in the weld?

Thanks

coating has to be ground down. You gotta have bare metal to weld to .

The exhaust shop was able to weld tabs onto our ceramic coated header collecter.I was also able to weld a small aera of the pipe to flange, and the enitre header is coated inside and out.As long as the work cable is is making a good connection,I think it will work.

ya some of your coating did end up in the slag but some of it also got mixed into the base metal creating a weak weld! i guarantee if you xrayed or ultrasound the weld it will show impurites and weak spots in the weld though not visable with the eye! they are there ! but it dosnt mean that they will break ! not yet anyway! but like i said do it right and save time and money! just a little grinding no big deal!!!
