Welded Axles

So I'm thinking about getting a 00 saleen 281 that is making some power. It's a turbo car. The whole car is built except for a few things that I would do to it right away. One thing that came to mind is the rear end. With that type of power I would be thinking diff rear and axles may be mandatory. I know I ran into problems with just 460rwhp on my gt. But in the description the guy lists "welded axles". I guess I would ask why weld them? Does it increase durability or something? why would that have been done.

Welded axles probably means the differential is welded together so the axles always turn together. The guy was obviously too cheap to even buy a spool. Anyway, you'd want to fix that if you want to drive it on the street.

This is what I think most people refer to when they say welded axles.

I suppose I should have worded that better. It has "welded" axle tubes.

The axle tubes in the 8.8 are just pressed in from the factory. Some people like to weld them to the pumpkin to prevent them from spinning / moving. I'd say that doing so can't hurt, but it's not enough to beef up the rear properly. Get some good 31-spline axles and a 31-spline carrier / differential of your choice (TrueTrac, Detroit Locker, or LSD) and you'll be fine.
