Welding oil pan???

This would be my concern. If the pan is not installed and clean, you can weld to your heart's content. If it IS installed, there is a chance that the hot metal will ignite the oil in the engine. This is obviously a bad thing. :flame:

I had the same problem with the oil pan on the car. I simply used JB Weld on the crack. Drain the pan so the oil isn't dripping out the crack, and sand the metal around the area. Then mix some JB Weld and push it onto the pan around the crack. Once it's dry, you can spray paint the bare metal. The crack I sealed this way has lasted several years with no leaks. :nice:
 
Best to weld it when it's not on the car. You're results will probably come out pretty bad. If it's on the car, I would just use some epoxy. It actually works pretty well.

its on the car...but i think if i lift the engine slightly and pull out my rack i should have no problem getting it off... If i had a stock K member on the car i think it would be another story... i have no intentions of welding it while its filled with oil LOL the weld is on the bottom of the pan no where near a gasket surface.... must of just not noticed it and painted over it... and over time it broke through the paint
 
Yeah. My think is that no matter how much you drain, there is always some sort of oil residue. Metal should always be nice and clean when you weld. Otherwise you are going to get contaminants into the metal when you weld it. As long as you can get into the pan with some degreaser and a rag, you can weld it.

Beyond the oil, which can contaminate the weld or burn, you also have the risk of combustible fumes, which explode.
