So i got the running ponies to replace my GT badges on the side, however, after taking off the GT badges, there is a very noticeable outline from the badge, and what looks like some leftover goo or dirt around the outline that didnt come off with goo gone. So i tried a clay bar, and that didnt help. Upon further inspection, it looks like there is a thing layer of clear stuff (i'm guessing this is clear coat) around the badge. i did get into an accident which required a new hood and front bumper and they told me they had to respray the undamaged front quarter panels too, which they said was to "blend in" the paint. Its almost as if they sprayed them without the emblems, put the emblems back on and then clear coated them. Or even just left the emblems on and resprayed. If you look close, it looks like the GT outline is indented in the paint.

OH, i replaced the GT Badge on the back too and did not have this problem, so which makes me think it was the respray on the quarter panels that is presenting the problems.

Any help? I put the GT badge back on for now, but would really like to use the horse badges!!

When they blend the tops of the fenders to the hood, they will need to reclearcoat to get everything nice and smooth on your fenders. Sounds like they either didn't re clear the entire fender and got overspray of the clear on the GT badge, or they reinstalled the badge before the clear was dry.

You would wetsand out the clear coat ridge... but not many want to take on that undertaking.

sorta sounds like they just taped off the badge, which will leave more clear where they sprayed and the regular level of clear below, causing a ridge. Damn bodyshops that dont take their time and do it right.

Yeah... it was a ford shop... :(

Right, so we've summed up the problem... HOW DO I FIX IT?

Some have suggested wet sanding... You think if i wet sanded the ridge down, what grit would i use? You think a porter cable random orbital buffer and some polishing compounds would take the swirls off after the sanding?

Same think happened with my car when i took the GT emblems and put V6 running ponys on.

1 side was fine, but the other side had an outline of the emblem in the clearcoat like a depression.

Unless it happened at the factory or before being put on the lot i dunno how it would happen cuz it's never been hit.

It doesn't show with silver and after some time it has sort of "blended" together. I'm sure a body shop could take it down easily with a buffer or some polish

2000 grit, lots of water, wetsand lightly. If you have a porter cable buffer then use it with 3M polishing compound. That stuff is the best I have used. You might not even need to wetsand if it is relatively smooth.

That exact thing happened to me when I decided to put on "281" emblems on the side of my Gt. Since I had the front end repainted, taking the GT badge off resulted in the same outline shown in your pictures (never be using that bodyshop again!). I ended up just putting the GT emblems back on since a repaint was my only option. :(

It's easier just to take the emblem off. I don't know why anyone would want to tape it. If it was taped and cleared over, you can't simply wetsand/buff it. It will still have an outline where the new clear meets old no matter how smooth you get it.
