Drivetrain What AOD do I have?

I bought this AOD to replace mine in my 90GT when the overdrive quit working around 216000 miles. Yep. I bought this car in 2011 with 196000 miles on the odometer with the factory alternator and the factory water pump still on it. All original. The mechanic that was gonna do the swap said it wasn't the same so I had him do a rebuild of the AOD in the car. $2100 for the rebuild at Ford but the old man who has worked there for 25 years did a good job. So can anyone tell me what I have? Bought this thing from a guy who's hobby is drag race his drag only Mustang. He said that it had been rebuilt. I pulled the pan to check and it was clean as a whistle and I could tell the bolts had been worked. So, what do I have? And thanks for looking.

I'm not sure how to tell off hand but 89-93 AOD's from Mustang were the best of the AOD bunch, as good as that bunch could be anyway.

In your picture the E9 in the part number indicates 1989 which means it could be an original transmission that came in a 1990. Do you know the part number of the one currently in your '90?

Yes it has the Ford Metric on bottom of oil pan.

No ,I don't know that. Been up underneath of it often enough. Changed the tail shaft bearing due to a vibration, didn't help much.

I guess the more you are gouging on it the quicker the life of the AOD.

They can be improved substantially from their stock form. Most popular upgrade is to upgrade the band from 1.5 to 2”. The 2” parts come from the AODE. Upgraded servo is also a good move along with valve body modifications.

In some of the longer cars the tailhousing is longer. Look for a tag that is bolted to the tailhousing on onne of the bolts. This will tell you more info as to what it is out of.

Unfortunately, the casting number isn't going to be much help

No tag on it anywhere. But I did find where someone put 1-22-05 with initials AH on it in black marker. Guessing that is the rebuild date and mechanic who did it.

So. I will put it on craigslist as an 89 AOD for a couple hundred and see what happens. Might be who buys it (if it sells) will know what he is getting. Don't want to mislead someone. And thanks for the help.

There might be a partial VIN stamped on a flat pad on top of the main case, near where the tailshaft housing is attached.

If anyone hAd to have one built youd call Freddy brown in Long Island NY or Lentech

Both have been 8s or faster and still retain overdrive .

As far as yours pictured maybe it was for a truck unit or a different car . The shifter lever is flipped up opposite of a Foxbody unit in that picture and looks like it’s almost setup for a column shift . I’d guess the other difference would Be a different length tail shaft as if it were for a truck .

With all the searching and looking and listening this is a 88 to 93 AOD that the linkage has been modified for the guys drag car. Probably been down the track a few times.
