I looked through my NPD catalog and a did not see a piece that went between the lower rear panel extension and the quarter panel.
I am replacing my quarter panel and found a homemade piece (only holding with bondo) in it's place.

Is there a piece I can buy? The rear panel does not look hacked, but the previous owner did say he was trying to make a GT out of the car.

Here is the pic:

Sorry, for the link, my Comcast internet will not allow me to upload pics, and their tech support will not help me, but that is a story for another time.....

Thanks in advance!
Chris

Is that the piece behind the rear bumper? Those look like the bumper holes. If it is, that piece doesn't come out. You would have to cut it out and weld a new piece in.

Other than the bumper and the quarter extension, no other piece goes there.

Is it possible that a GT valance does not fit a 66 convertible? Was there different valances for a coupes and convertibles?

Not possible. A valance is a valance. It looks like yours is a POS and is a few inches too short though.

you need to squeeze that quarter further toward the driver side. looking at the picture, your tail light holes are off yet also. The holes should line up.
there are no other parts at the valence to quarter where you have circled.
I added a GT valence to my '66 convertible (originally a 6 cylinder), so they fit.

I changed about 90% of the sheet metal on my car. The aftermarket parts need a lot of finessing, but it can be done.
Most likely you are not aligned with the inner wheelhouse and the inner trunk drop section (part that surrounds the gas tank. If you replaced these as well, the trunk drop piece was about 2 inches too long on the parts I used.

good luck.
