ok i'm getting ready to build my next motor....here's the parts....dss 9.5 to 1 306, edelbrock performer rpm heads-ported, gt-40 lower-ported with downs box upper.... rpm peaks with this intake at about 7000, comp cams magnum roller rockers... here's the question should i stick with the cam i have ( lunati 51014) witch is very similar to trick flow stage 1 but has more duration, or go with a ford racing z cam? i'm on a budget so i only get these choices....the lunati cam seems to fall off past 5500 and i'm looking for a 6500 power peak but i'm worried i just don't have enough compression to realy take advantage of the z cam. oh and i have 4.10 gears so i'm realy not worried about loosing the low end torque of the lunati. any advice would be great.

hey Paul I was just cking the comp website, their flat tappet cams with 280* total duration and 230*@0.050 recommend 9.5:1 cr...

that is a pretty high lift, might be a little too much for your mild application, the F cam w/ the edelbrock heads is a really good combo .... seen it on a car at the track that ran 12.90 was nice....

0.552" really isn't that high...another friend of ours is running a Comp blower cam-split pattern running 0.544" and 0.560" respectively

yeah .552 lift realy is not too extreme, it's mainly the duration that i'm a little woried about. On a side note i found a 390hp ford racing 302 crate motor that only has 10-1 compression that uses the z cam so i might be able to run this cam and not just be blowing a lot of hot air like i'm worried about.

yeah the Trick flow timing chain i got makes it realy easy to advance or retard the cam....you can do it in 4deg increments.....the down side....ed's has to do a little work for me to use the thing oh....and is my car realy considered mild? i thought it was getting a little out of hand...

oh good grief...once you pass about 400hp, then you can consider it more than mild...you can still drive your car with ease on the street...mild to moderate upgrades

what work does Ed have to do to use the timing chain?

edit: ok, maybe a little more than mild-400hp any way you cut it is more than mild...but still, you're car is fairly docile compared to some of the local LS1 guys running a 0.600" lift cam w/235* @ 0.050"...

I've got a ****in 600 lift cam, and I hate it! Ed Curtis Custom cam.. Go with a f303 its pretty wicked..

Any of the 303 cams are way out of date, and there are much better grinds out there for the money. Don't waste your time on 80's technology. Get a custom cam, or a nice Comp Cams.

maybe you missed the part in the first thread where i said i have no money, i would love to get a custom cam! but right now this is what i have to work with.

he has to countersink my cam thrust plate, with this trick flow chain you can't use the stock bolts....they will hit... wish it said something about it on their freakin site

any of the 303 cams out of date? hmmm, don't quite agree there-John Urist uses one in his hellion turbo'd lx...pushed 800hp to the pavement...lots of turbo guys are using them to make stupid amounts of power. You might wanna do a little more research before you interject your (obviously) biased opinion. I agree there are better grinds available; however, they're still the second cheapest brand new roller cam (cheapest being the TFS stage 1 or 2), and they still prove to be a good cam for someone looking to get decent numbers for a sizable margin less that what a custom cam goes for...Comp wants $250, FTI wants $325 (which I'll be saving my spare change for), and I suspect all the rest of the custom cam grinders want somewhere around that price for one-last time I ck'd any of the alphabet cams can be had for less than $200 just about anywhere you look, some of them being only $160...let's review his options, Z cam which is gonna be free to him (from me), or the Lunati which is already in the car...

Nothing I said was "biased" It's the truth. 303 cams are 80's technology. I could make 2000 HP with the stock cam. Gimme enough boost and a good tune, and I'm there. If it's free... go for it dood... But I wouldn't put that in my car if someone paid me.
