what can cause a "pop" up by the motor, not a backfire?

i posted a thread about my balancer the other day and in it i included that after starting the car and it sat for maybe a min-min and a half my buddy gave it 2 real quick(pretty good) revs from the throttle cable, well on the second rev it popped, up in what sounded like the engine bay....def not from the exhaust...what would cause this....it hasnt happend since but i know its not normal....

While I was adjusting the timing on Andy's car a pop happened from somewhere. Sounded like it came from the intake. Freaked my ass out. Once I got it set though it never returned.

thats what i was thinking at first too...because i remember my car popped similarly after the manifold install before the timing was set right...like if i would stab it real quick in a low gear....but it hasnt dont it since i set the timing at 12* maybe ill go in there and check the timing again...it cant hurt to take a look....

edit: could something like this be caused by running too rich for some reason??...the only reason i ask is this....sometimes during hot starts(after ive been driving some time and turn the car off, and then go to start it again) it starts pretty crappy...now it starts better during hot starts if when i turn the key i give a slight press of the gas....and i remember reading something about if you need to press the gas in to start the car, then the car is dumping too much fuel at startup....

Actually I think it's more like a lean pop. It's only done it once?

i just dont get it Joe...i mean just now i took the car out for a spin....cruised till she was op in the normal sweep...turned out onto a 3 lane highway and ripped through 1st and second...and to tell ya the truth it was the smoothest the car has ever felt, zero signs of detonation or anything.....felt great, and real fast....

I wouldn't worry about it then. Probably weather related or something.

My car did the same thing after my buddy did a tune up for me. We didn't have time to set the timing as we were both on a schedule that night and had to be kinda quick since it took so long for him to get my pro-chamber on. It sounded crazy like a loud pop coming from the intake. I'll get my timing set in a week or two and see what happens its only done it like 3 or 4 times ever.

my car did that all the time when it was na. and the engine temp wasn't up yet, and it still does it to me now if i get into the throttle too much when it's cold , it pops out the intake , the only thing i can think of we did not tune anything with my car when it was cold ,so it's something with the cold start up ?

well its actually reassuring to know that a car that is running as strong as yours has/does experience that problem, not that i wish problems on your car, just knowing that apparently its not something serious...

same problem ,replaced IAC and all is well. (pintle was sticking)
popping through the intake is a lean condition,
backfiring out the exhaust means its to rich..
