for a DD with a basically stock engine the performer 600 is a good carb. very dependable and works great right of the box.

With a Performer intake and stock heads, a 600cfm carb is all you need.

Everybody is correct but I wanted to add that the "Performer" intake is basically a direct replacement for the stock intake. just made of aluminum instead of cast iron. It really doesn't offer any performance. The RPM, Weiand stealth, or better yet the RPM Air Gap would offer some more giddyup.
I just mention this because any gain you get will be solely from the carb. upgrade. If you can swap the intake for a better one, then you will get a slight gain and be ready for further upgrades (heads and cam). Also, if you go with one of these intakes, a "slightly" larger carb. may work better.

Yes on the 600 Edelbrock, may even try like a 525 or something. That motor only has 8.5:1 comp so you don't need much. Also, if you go with the Edel carb, get the electric choke model as it runs a little leaner.

I agree w/ mustangdave on the performer vs. RPM Air Gap. Unless you upgrade your cam the 600 is plenty but changing your manifold will help w/ the giddy-up factor. Edelbrock does offer packages that include cam, carb, manifold. Look at their website for suggestions.
