What could cause this problem to happen with my Mach 1?

While driving home from work I stopped at a light then made a turn when it turned green. Halfway through the turn the car died. Thinking I did something stupid I restarted it only for it to die again. I got it going again and looked down and saw the gas gage read empty and the Low Fuel light was on. It had half a tank when I went into work and started to wonder if someone hadn't siphoned my tank. As I went further down the road the gas gauge started to go up and the Low Fuel light went off. By the time I got home it was up to almost a quarter. I decided to go past my house and to the gas station down the street. I put just over 2 gallons in it ($5) just to see what it would do and it went up to just over half a tank, right where it should be. What could cause that to happen? It was about 39 degrees outside so I don't think the gas could have been frozen. Anyone have any ideas?

leaning to fuel pump electrical.. pump is probably fine... however the wires, or somethign along the electrical sending line is the issue... maybe something to do with a pinched line... dunno. leaning electrical... prolly cut the fuel pump died... car died... was still out so it read zero. just a guess...

My old 99 GT did something like that too.

I went to the gas station and filled up. Left, made a stop at the store, and when I started the car back up and drove about a mile I noticed that the gas gauge was on E. I stopped and got out of car, to make sure there wasn't a leak. When I got back in it was back to full.

Weirdest thing ever.

I'd guess your fuel level sensor is the problem and you're running out of gas. You could fill the tank. reset trip meter and see if the gauge readings make sense. I'm pretty sure though you're running out of gas, especially when it dies going around corners at first. Fuel sloshing away from pump, and engine dies.

Since I had just put gas in it the day before I seriously doubt I was running out of gas. Also, I only put two gallons in it Tuesday, when that happened, and here Thursday it is running fine without anymore being added.
