what could prevent the tranny from going into gear with car off?

I just installed a new clutch with new TOB and Pilot bearing. I have a fiore firewall adjuster and clutch quadrant. I went all the way out and all the way in with the adjuster and that didn't change a thing except for pedal effort. The tranny will not go into 3rd or 4th even with the car off. It goes about halfway into the gear but doesn't fully seat into the gear to actually move the car. I am also getting some noises coming from the tranny in first gear and second but second it noticeably worse. This is my first clutch job ever so I am not too confident that I didn't mess something up. The car is in the air so I actually haven't driven it like this. I dunno what would make it not go into gear without the car running. The tranny has no issues at all except for the occasional grinding 3rd when I would quick shift it. The shifter has adjustable stops on it, should I pull them back a little?
