pattern on a 65 mustang 5 lug. I`ve heard terms like 5 by 4.5 and stuff like that, is there a common term used to describe our bolt patterns?

Yes. The first number desribes the number of lugs. The second number is the distance from one lug to the next (but not next to one another, it is the distance from one lug to another of the two across from the one, thus 4.5 is 4 and one half inches from one lug across to the next (either of two lugs across)).
As far as I know the bolt patterns on early v8 mustangs were 5X114.3mm.
This is also shared by acuras and other imports
my wheels, they are too wide for the car, and other then telling people they are 5 lug passenger car ford wheels, I dont know how to describe them.

Measure from ceenter-to-center useing the hole to the left as #1, the next #2 and the next #3....measure from #1 to #3...CENTER-to-CENTER

5X4.5---we didn't do ANYTHING in metric in 64.
