What Do You Carry And Why?

I'm going to bring a much larger (I think) conversation to the thread. What's so unlike me is that it happens to be on-topic :rlaugh:

Most of you guys have probably at least heard of Paul Harrell. Well, he also has a Youtube channel.

Do not be fooled by the topic of this video. The topic of this video isn't the conversation piece. The conversation piece within this video is about:

What Do You Carry And Why?

The section I'm talking about begins here:

just like to give a recommendation for holsters if anyone might be interested ... buy all my gun leather from
same edc for over seven years with just the minimum of upkeep
this guy is an independant businessman, provides a excellent (and expanding) product line and answers your contacts personally
give him a shot (pun intended)

I recently upgraded my carry from a Springfield XDs .45 to a Springfield RO Elite Champion. Had a local gunsmith install a lower profile Wilson Combat ambi safety that doesn't require the notch in the right side grip so I could run a set of Altamont slimline rosewood grips. Also had the smith install a solid black trigger with a medium length pad, a "true-radius" sear and disconnector kit with a commander-style hammer, and a custom front sight using a blank SA front sight with a gold bead to replace the factory fiber optic sight. Also dropped in a Wilson Combat extended slide release to help with my lefty mag changes. I'm pretty happy with it. First picture is as it came from the factory with the hideous G10 grips. The holster and mag carrier are both from Milt Sparks.

Very nice setup! I'm happy with my "lowly" Rock Island Commander .45 ACP. I have that same holster, too! :)
I had a Springfield V-10 Ultramax .45 (compensated 1911). It would not feed Hydra-Shoks, but fed everything else just fine. I didn't really like the compensator feature that much, and traded it in on the RIA. Happy I did, it eats everything I feed it!

If anyone still watches this thread, I got a surprise gift I would like to share about.
I was not coming up with good ideas for my Christmas list, and I refuse to go down the tie and sock road, especially since I don't have anyplace I need a tie for very often anymore and can buy my own socks.
So knowing my dad had not used any of Grandpa's or his rifles since Grandpa had a stroke and we took inventory, (he's been gone for probably a decade.), I asked for preferably the Enfield rifle (1917 or an SMLE, I could not remember after seeing it once, but functional history is cool!) or the sporterized Japanese 6.5 I had put stock steel sights back on about ten years ago and we have never tested out again..
Grandpa did shoot shotguns, but I do not think he went hunting for other than birds and home defense.
So, I openeed the box that has the ammo, and there are some .303 brass and loaded rounds, then 4 full 30.06 boxes and an almost full one, from about 1970. And there are two boxy clips (I don't thunk they qualify as magazines or stripper clips) with rounds in them. So I was wondering what?? At that point.
Then I get the gun bag, and it's the rifle still with the $75 tag from the sporting goods shop cir. 1970 on the trigger guard. And it has a much, much newer scope on it. The only wear to the bluing is on the trigger guard from the zipper. (It might be black paint off a brass guard,) The stock is like new, and is not anything military. I see a serial number, but no brand stamp lime I was sure is on the Enfeld.
So, I need to see if I got a much nicer, or at least less used hunting rifle, what the heck it is, and that I know how to load and unload etc before heading out to the shooting range. I will post pics if I cannot figure out what I got in the next few days.
I wanted something bigger than the 10-22. for the coyotes, Bob the cats puma sightings, and missing guard cats. (No Cougar is going to mess with our show and pet dogs.) I think I got it. I just do not know what I have, yet.

I've always wanted one of those short barrel pump shot guns for home defence, I don't want to take the time to aim.
I have a changeable short & long barrel 12 ga. Cabelas club points are handy. But by the time you hit the predator, the pooch or human in the yard or house is going to be perforated, too. And a paintball gun with jawbreakers is outside my cost and learning curve right now, but still is an attractive idea.
I also need to find out if Grandpa went deer hunting or just wanted to. I think he also had a scope put on a shotgun for some reason. I did not see that one, but my son confirms its existence.

Merry Christmas Kearney Nebraska!
did some time at Kearney State in the late '70's ... well, my girl friend at the time did and I was a frequent visitor.
no gas after Gothenburg till you get to North Platte and a long drive to Gering. still own the same sidearm that
was my constant travel companion in the old daze.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions out there, and grinds my gears every time I hear it!
YES, you DO need to aim a shotgun. At typical indoor ranges, the pattern just doesn't open up much bigger than the diameter of the barrel. Also, you are responsible for every projectile that leaves the barrel, so you need to aim properly.

Chit, figures I'd want a cannon to make up for my lack of skills and I gotta use it like a club because I don't want to kill my neighbors.
Oh well, pull the trigger, take your chances
I still want one.
All you need are some lessons, should not be a big deal. You WILL need to learn how to handle it safely, and how to clean it and store it properly.
I'm sure there are firearm instructors in FL that would help you with it, just ask at any gun store. I could teach you myself if I lived in your area.
I saw in your other post you already have a handgun. Those are great for home defense, too! A long gun is easier to aim and hit with at longer ranges.

Lack of skills is easy to fix. Stupidity... not so much. ;)
