That's what's held me back so far. I'm doing a lot of window shopping and reading reviews. Plus it'll be a pain to have to hold the lever back every time I load a new mag. Looks like most of them require mods to the original stock to even fit but they should just snap in with my Tapco stock.

As much as I'd love to have an AR, the wifey won't let me invest that much money in a gun at the moment.

I'm about 3.5 hours from Atlanta. I'm close to Charlotte, NC.

What is wrong with the word "Clips"? I can not use Hot Rod or Car Craft magazines in my 10/22. Please make me smarter.

You can use clips to help load a magazine, but you can't use a magazine to load clips!

Some pictures, just to help clarify.

Thanks! I feel smarter now! I knew Popular Mechanics was the wrong magazine.

That is a Very informative picture. I do not think that snake is quite dead yet. He is at least not dead quickly enough for me. How can anyone go bird hunting with that gauge shell?

Most .410 slugs won't pass the FBI minimums for self-defense through a full sized shotgun (I think there are 2 specialty rounds that do). NONE of them pass through a handgun (check box-o-truth). To put that into some perspective, there are many 9mm rounds that make the minimum. I think there are a couple of high end .380 ACP rounds that make it, but they hurt to shoot.

Lots of the muzzle energies I've seen have the .410 caliber rounds I've seen are in the 700-800 range. I saw a specialty round that was up around 1,000 with a 114 grain bullet (lighter than most 9mm Luger rounds). Lots of SD 9mm rounds are 1200-1300. And that's through a full sized shotgun and not the Judge barrel.

Now, the .45 LC through the Judge is another story. It's not bad.

Here's there "blown the f away" snake picture:

Eh, it's probably dead, but this was at something like 3-6 feet . . . which means the shooter could have easily taken 2 steps in three different directions to avoid the snake as opposed to firing the 2 or 3 rounds that it would take to properly "blow away" the snake.

The Judge is a quality built firearm, BUT the .410 round just isn't that powerful of a round. No way I'd carry that thing for SD unless it's loaded with .45 LC . . . and if you're going to carry the Judge in .45 LC, eh, there are better options for .45 LC.

Checkout that box of truth article (there are two of them, actually). For SD work, the judge is a BIG heavy (but quality!) weapon shooting a REALLY light round. It's basically the worst of both worlds for carry work.

GREAT quality firearm, thought! I'm sort of a Taurus guy, actually.

Well, the pattern in that snake picture needs some 'splainin... The Judge pistols have a rifled barrel, to stabilize a .45 Colt bullet, and maybe a .410 slug. For a shotshell, though, the rifling causes the shot load to spread out faster, making a larger group. If you were hunting birds with a .410, you'd hopefully be using a shotgun with a longer barrel.

That is still not a lot of little holes compared to a 12ga.

How far away was the snake paper shot from? I thought 410 has a tighter pattern than most shotguns which is why it requires more accuracy.

Edit - Less grains I believe. Which requires more accuracy and explains the fewer holes in the paper.

It was something like 6-10 feet . . . nothing major.

The .410 just ISN'T that much gun, and it's really not in a short barrel handgun. Like I've said, the IDEA is great i.e. a "little" shotgun, but it's not a 12 gauge duck killer. It's a .410 caliber ultra light shotshell.

I think it'd be great for home defense. 410 round followed by a 45. You fire the first shot as a warning. They're crippled and can either lay down as instructed or take a 45. I want one for a bedside gun.

It's too big for CC. I prefer a pocket pistol. Even my Shield feels too big after carrying my 380.

From a Judge, it's possible that the round won't penetrate thick clothing i.e. your first shot is going to warn him that he's in a life-threatening fight i.e. his next move is to shoot back with what is most likely a much more effective round. And if he's behind ANYTHING, that pretty much thwarts the round.

I'm not saying I'd hang around to be shot by a .410 round, BUT, I'd be much more comfortable exchanging 10mm rounds with someone shooting at me with a .410 shot with a short barrel than your .380 ACP.

No matter how you size it up, the .410 for much of any real self-defense (snakes included), just isn't much IN COMPARISON with even a fairly conservative centerfire pistol cartridge.

Again, I LOVE the idea . . . it just doesn't really work how people think it would work (me included).

Ever been shot with a 410? I'd be willing to bet money it'll pierce your thick clothing and drop you to the floor. Statistically speaking, most gun fights take place less than 7 yards apart so I firmly believe a 410 shot would hurt pretty bad. If I feared for my life (and not just my TV), there's a good chance the 2nd (45) round would hit the intruder before he can hit the ground. The good thing about not breaking in to a house is you know it. You're not fumbling into things and have the element of suprise (in most cases).

As for the 380, unless you're jacked up on meth or PCP, a round or 2 WILL hurt and cause you to stop attacking me. Kinda like the camera saying (the best one is the one you have with you), a 22 would suffice for most cases. If someone wants to kill you, they'll catch you off gaurd and squeeze a bullet in the back of your head. CC is all about hiding your weapon and having it readily accessible if needed. Ballistic, JHP, etc rounds are all great. A 45 is great, but for me it's too big and heavy. It hinders my daily operations and therefore would sit in my car most days....not very effective.

Guess it depends on what the .45 comes wrapped in. A Glock 36 is nowhere what I would consider bulky, or cumbersome and at about 27oz, not exactly heavy either.

@joshw0000 I totally agree with your statement about why your carry a CC. Element of surprise! I was telling someone the other day how I don't care to open carry and that some people in the gun community frown upon it calling those people "flashers". The guy got all offended and was like, "Maybe in your part of the country that's true." I just responded with why I feel that way, a few great books I've read on the subject of concealed carry and I happen to agree with the author (Massad Ayoob). The whole time I'm thinking to myself I live in freaking GA, everyone has a gun.

I love and carry my .45 fairly concealed and it's light enough to wear I carry an extra mag as well.

My one argument with that line of logic, is that you are probably "more" likely to run into issues with CC than you are with open carry.

With the weapon concealed, the person may just assumed you aren't armed at all and "give you a try". Of course, this would be their folly, but it makes little difference...they still may have made the attempt.

When it's carried in the open, there's no mistaking that you're armed and the mere visual presence of it is as likely to act as a deterrent to an attack as it would be in defence of one as well. Two forms of protection, instead of just one....if you will.

I disagree with this whole heartedly. If someone is going to attack me, they're probably going to start a fist fight. If I'm being robbed, they'll hold me up at weapon point. Either way I will react like I normally would and have the advantage that my attacker doesn't know I'm armed.

If someone wants to attack you, they see your weapon. So instead of holding you up at gun point to take your wallet and leaving you the element of suprise to possibly put a round or 2 in them, they just shoot you and take you wallet...and gun.

The "drawback" to OC is that a determined bad guy (or gang) already knows you're armed, so they may just walk up and shoot you without warning. YES, this has happened.

Just something to think about...

Something else to think about...

Why do people rob? To get money or things of value, right? Do you wear nice rings, necklaces, watches? That shiny $500 gun looks pretty appealing to a would be mugger. Now he's a murderer. Guns are easy to sell or perfect for bad guys looking to rob more people.

His dope man would probably give him a month's supply for that Glock 45.

I noticed this sign as I walked OUT of a local mall about a month ago.

OOOOPPSSS!!

My situation would have been different if my gun was on the other side of my pants.

Not trying to put anybody down for how they carry. Just throwing out some food for thought.
