What Do You Carry And Why?

...I also keep a couple of clips close by.
Magazines!
A clip is used to reload a magazine, either attached or internal, think your Garand or the 1903 Springfield, 1898 Mauser Karabiner, the such.
A magazine is the device that physically holds and stores the ammunition.
Look at it this way: a Clip feeds the magazine, the magazine feeds the weapon. The interchangeability of incorrect terms drives me insane, haha

Just about everything from Massad Ayoob is good! Some of his books and videos should be required study for anyone getting their CCW, imo. Lots of his videos on YouTube, too! :nice:

Hey Ronin, I used to read everything he wrote as gospel, but I'm a little more careful, now. Several of his "investigations" that he testified to have been proven false (he was wrong), and there are a few other things he's asserted that evidence has born out as being "off". NOT SAYING HE'S COMPLETELY WRONG ALL THE TIME! I've just learned it's okay to ask questions.

As for my daily carry, Tennessee has open carry so I'm free to hork around my Glock 20 in a comfortable kydex rig. If I conceal, I carry a G27 in either .40 or .357 Sig (barrel swap). Lisa carries an XDM in .45 or a Taurus PT-145 (which I actually prefer). I CAN carry my Tanfo in .38 Super, but it's heavy. I have carried a 1911, but I find it way to heavy to be called comfortable, and I never feel solid with C&L condition. Honestly, while it was "the" choice for decades, I see no reason to give it preference, anymore. Love the gun, and it goes to the range every time, but for carry, it just doesn't have an advantage, anymore.

I'm seriously considering something in 9mm if we move and I need "small". I've been REALLY impressed with some of the new 9mm bullet performance, and it's getting to where there's precious little difference in most of the significant SD calibers out there. It's a wonderful world.

For blade work, I've got a couple of Spyderco or spring assist Kershaws to pick from. I'm REALLY transitioning to the Kershaws more and more as I get more experience with them. I have a practice Karambit design that the family is playing with. I like the IDEA of it, but I'm not sold, yet.

I carry my taurus judge public defender. I believe it is illegal in some state's because they consider it to be a short barrel shot gun. Not in florida. It is a little bulky but I like it with the 410 or the 45 long colt

J, you're fine with the Judge in any state. It's rifled and not considered a shotgun (smoothbore). I BELIEVE that's the technicality that keeps it off the NFA list.

That being said, the performance of the .410 in that gun is pretty questionable against human tar gets. There have been several studies really getting into the performance, and basically it's going to have a tough time doing any real damage. The .45LC loading is pretty good, though. You have some decent choices there.

D, I'm by far no expert in the matter . I have a friend from Riverside Ca that came to visit me a few months back an he the one that told me that it was not legal in California . My source of info could be wrong . I think the Winchester PDX 410 rounds would put some one down at close range but the 45 lc will reach out an touch some one.

Strictly my own opinion, but I think the PDX rounds are too much of a "gimmick." Stick with the proven 00 Buck, slugs, or .45LC for anti-personnel usage. Since the barrel is rifled anyway, stick to slugs or .45's.

I'd much rather carry anything else than the .410 pistols. ANY other gun with a larger pistol-caliber is lighter, easier to carry and more effective than those things with shotgun rounds in them. (9mm and up.)

Found out California bans the .410/.45LC combination specifically. Go figure. It's a state thing but not a federal thing.

Check that out. There aren't much of any pistol based .410 performance data that's worth doing. Out of a full sized shotgun, there are some decent performers, BUT I can't think of any reason to do it UNLESS the .410 shotgun was ALL you had.

Another funny thing about the Judge is the "snake" thing. People carry it for snake protection, but given the tests, what you'd have to do is shoot 2 or 3 rounds REALLY close and HOPE the snake doesn't strike. The .410 just doesn't have enough payload to reliably get snake kills with one shot. So, in direct terms, here are your choices if you run across a dangerous snake. You stand still in the danger zone, pull the gun, shoot once, hope the snake doesn't strike and/or you kill it, fire again and AGAIN hope you kill it and/or it doesn't strike, rinse and repeat . . . OR . . . you can take 2 steps away and both of you leave unharmed.

Meh . . .

THAT BEING SAID, by all accounts the Judge is a well made gun . . . and I'm a Taurus fan to boot. LOL!

I have a hi point c9 it was the first pistol that I bought an I like it but don't have faith in it to carry . I have been looking at the ruger sr40c . What is your opinion on it ?

D, with all do respect, umm a .410 slug out of a judge would rock someone's world, and the snake would be blown the f away with a bb load. Imho.
