What do you think of MOTIVE Gears?

I just had some Motive 4:10s installed. The gears I got were tall on one side, so they had to be machined down in order to install them. Other than that, though, I haven't had any problems with them yet.

yeah that kit will work for both. I took my longer on my chevy 8.5 to get my pinion depth with motive gears. with my FRPP I just did the stock shim worked. that is well worth the $9 extra.

trust me as much force as you have to use to the the crush sleave to the correct rotating force you won't wany to do it twice if you don't have to.

Well maybe. See i dont know what im doing so me and another mechanic are going to have to figure this out. (if i can't get one of my ford tech guys i know to help me do it...but im not best friends with them, and as you know, no one does anything for free..) So since im broke im stuck with doing this myself.

Not sure if you guys want a whole write up of me figuring out how to do this. But i'll consider it lol I'm sure i'll have pics

Hopefull i can do this THIS weekend...but not likely. Probably 2 weeks form now.

I have Motive 4.10's and I love them. I did the install with my brother, neither of us had done a gear install and they fit great with no whine. I beat on them all the time!!!

Well thats reassuring lol Did you use a dial-indicator for the install? If so, where did you get one?

I can't seem to find a good Magnetic base, Dial Indicator (preferably with one of those flex arms on it)

Just had Motive 3:90 gears installed today. Didn't watch the intall process as I didn't want to get in the way, but the installer was satisfied with the quality and no issues with getting them installed.

nice I'm hopin for an easy install myself, but i know it wont go that way lol. Should get them in, in a few days. So probably installing not this weekend, but next.

Yeah we used one. My brother got it from his lab I believe (he has a PhD in physics - he has all kinds of cool stuff) But you can find one online and they are cheap. Here is one from Summit Racing for $26.

I hope your install goes well. I remember banging on my stock pinion gear for about an hour before it would come out, so don't be surpried if yours hangs on for dear life as well.

I haven't heard of one of those. We used one identical to that one and it worked just fine. Good luck on your install! Gears will put a smile on your face ten miles wide!! Enjoy!

my .02

as long as you have a dial indicator and a good manual that shows wear pattern it is almost impossible to mess up unless you just can't read instructions.

pinion preload 15in/lbs used bearing 25in/lbs new bearing
backlash .008-.012
wear pattern
carrier preload .005-.007 to each size after setup is complete
verify runout of the ring gear after you torque the caps

get those three things correct and you are home free.

the crush sleave on mine was tricky. it took alot of torque to get the preload desired.

Ok well i have not taken my rear differential class in tech school yet, and i have not read any write ups on gear installs yet either, so i dont know what those numbers are meaning or refering to just yet. lol

I currently am running into another problem: I can't find full synthetic 75w-140 gear oil

Ford sells some for $18.19 per quart, and they said my car takes 4 quarts "he thinks" (says the service guy i was talking to). I found some online but my credit card is maxed, so i can't put it on there...leaving me having to find a local dealer of this stuff. And i found some Royal Purple 75w-140 but the guy only sells it in bundles of 12 quarts, totaling around $160.

Anyone in the northern NJ area know a place i can get some 75w-140 gear oil OTHER than ford? Autozone doesn't carry it, the best they carry is 75w-90 Mobil 1.

EDIT:
Just found some full synthetic Valvoline 85w-140 at a local NAPA store for $7.99 per quart. The guy says its compatible.... anyone confirm this??

well, you've done a lot right? Probably be more informative coming from an experienced mechanic than a rookie. NOt saying he cant do it right, but its the small things you pick up after doing something like that over and over again. just my .02. I'd appreciate a gear install how-to coming from anyone if its done right

HAHA hey dont be shy man call it what it is. I am a rookie, ESPECIALLY compared to SVTTECH, i wouldn't want to read a gear install write up written by myself either LOL i have no idea what im doin I'm starting to wonder if i should even really do this myself, or what. Brings a whole new meaning to "fear the gear" for me LOL

I will probably do a write up though, but it would be a brief walk through, nothing like SVTTECH could offer.

In fact, im looking for some gear install write ups as well as a traction lock rebuild write up...which i can't seem to find anywhere...

if you search the web you will find a ton of write up's.

there are instructions on fordracings website but they are not great for a beginer.

the big issue on most write up's is how to find pinion depth. like I said earlier I got lucky and the stock shim worked fine. the problem with pinion depth is you don't know it is wrong until everthing is in place and if it is wrong you have to re setup everthing.
