What do you think of MOTIVE Gears?

So while i am rebuilding my Traction Lok on my car this weekend (since its dead, and im currently peg-legged), i thought "hey while i have the diff open, why not throw some gears in). Unfortunately my end bill in parts alone is over $300 for: gears, oil, gear shim kit, t-lock rebuild kit & a speedcal.

So im thinking i might save some cash and instead of getting the FRPP 3.73 ($180) gears i wanted, i would get the cheap Motive 3.73s for $130. The FRPP gears come with shims and would be $165 shipped, while the motives would be $156 shipped to my door with shims too. I know its only $9, but its 9 i dont have on my credit card right now

So i was wondering what you guys thought of Motive gears....

Any bad experiences? Cheaply made? do they tend to break lol, etc etc.

They are NOT the "performance plus ones" which are supposedly the same but lighter. So im getting the heavy "econo" gears.

Tell me what you guys think.

Should i just save up another week to get the FRPP gears? Is there even a differnece between Motives and FRPP?? (i personally just always try to buy FRPP, but i thought i'd try osmethign else this time sinec im broke)

my buddy just had the motives installed on his 02, he is very very happy with them. they were the performance plus, but still if they are installed correctly they will perform very well and you wont be sorry im sure.

If i got the FRPP gears. Do i HAVE to get the shim kit "install" kit? I know the FRPP comes with shims, but should i have the actual kit to install it with? Or is it not needed.

I've not heard much from Motive, other than they are for sale....not saying they are good or bad.

I have heard good results from:

• FRPP
• Richmond
• Pro5.0

I had FRPP 3.73s on my 1995 Cobra, with a superb installation, and never had issues over 68,000 miles. The FRPP's would be my choice.

i dont have any problems with my motive 3.90's. they ahve been in for about a year now.

havent heard much about the motive gears, i only have FRPP on mine so i couldn't tell you if they are good

well i have seen 3 sets of motives that were the wrong size in the last month.. other than that.. no issues. I would just save the 9 dollars though.

If doing the install yourself I would get the FRPP.

my stock pinion shim worked fine for the FRPP gears. the odds of that happing on the motive are slim.

to me this is a not brainer. you are just not saving any money and most likely costing yourself mor labor.

the only reason IMO to run motive, richmond, etc is if you want a ratio ford does not offer.

there is nothing wrong with the motive gears, 99.99999999999 percent of noise and other issues from a gear install is the person who installed it.

crap install = noise instantly

hack install = noise in a few thousand miles

good install = no noise.

Hey SVT. you ever install a set of FRPP gears? Do the shims that come with the gears enough to do the install with? Or do you need that "shim install kit" sold on mustangtuning and other sites for like $40?

Because if the FRPP kit comes with everything you need, then i will just save up and get that kit, since thast the kit i want anyway

yeah I have installed quite a few gear sets including mine.

My 4.10's are ford replacement gears meant for a ranger 8.8 ( I got them for a very good price $0 )

FFRP and ford replacement part gears come with pinion shims but DO NOT have the carrier shims.

so you have to buy the kit anyways, because your going to have to shim your carrier correctly

Aaaah. Ok well then i'll pass on the FRPP gears. If i have to buy the $40 shim kit anyway, i'll shop around for some gears then. These motives look good to me then lol

I'd go with the frpp. they're easier to install using the method killy has mentioned, resulting in a less likely hood of gear whine.

make sure you verify the motives come with the carrier shim kit as well or you will still have to buy that.

when I put motives in my truck I can't remeber if the shims came with the ring and pinion or the install kit. I was thinking it was the install kit but this was about 5 years ago so I could be worng.
