Do any of you that have kids (young ones) have cell phones for them? A buddy of mine from work said what they have there own cell phones?! I say yeah why? He says how old are they i say my daughter is 8 and my son is 12. So is that to young of an age for them to have there own cells? eace

No not at all to young just gotta play it smart. I owned a cell phone company in phoenix and i can tell you that about 40% of my customers baught cell phones for there kids!

just buy them pay as you go phones, that way you pay a set ammount for them each month, and theres no way for them to go over their min.

Who cares what your co-worker thinks! Today kids have all the gadgets and a phone is a common one regardless of what age. It does give parents a way to keep tabs on the kids and communicate. Just think if you didn't let your child use a computer. How far behind in school and technology they would be compared to their peers.

I think cell phones are a good security for kids. With as often as kids are out on their own, whether it's walking to the bus stop, or at school when there's a lock down, etc.... It's kinda a "cheap insurance" and a "better to be safe than sorry" deal.

Verizon even makes phones now that only have I think two buttons, MOM or DAD, or whoever you program in. it's perfect for really young ones. But, like Allen said, too, you don't really want to let your kids fall behind the times. I'd say at 13ish it's time to learn responsibility and cell phones are a popular way to teach it.

So, I say, if you can afford it, definately. There's not many logical reasons I can think of why NOT to have one for your kid.

+1. I think that kids these days have a bit too much technology that it distracts from their education (How many of you have had cell phones ringing in high school or college classes?) However, I like that Mom/Dad button phone idea for the youngsters, as it would teach them to only use the phone for contacting the parents for 'responsible' reasons.

Ya, I know what you mean about the ringing in the classroom (I'll admit, two years ago when I was in HS it was definately a problem, but was also kinda considered rude and disrespectful and it was more embarrassing than it was "cool" to have your phone go off. So, I think over time it won't be as much as in issue) But I think that's part of the responsibility that kids have to learn.

Its the biggest joke if you ask me. My son HAD one and now he has NONE. The pay as you go is also a joke. They have no concept of money untill they have to earn it themselves. MY son BLEW through 150.00 in 1 week. He dumped all the x-mas money he got into that damn cellphone and he couldn't have cared less because he didnt have to work for the money.

I made it as a kid without a cell phone and Im still alive...

ohh yeah and the horror stories I have heard from other parents about text messaging overage.. my sons friend had 10k test messages in one month and the bill was 500.00 I WOULD have killed my son.


WASTE if time and money unless you know your child is responsible.. I have a phone you can have. It's t-mobile...

ok now that I have vented... iIm serious jon, its a distraction and it will cause fights between you and your kid and then for some reason they think since they have a phone they can do whatever because " why didnt you call me".... AHHHH.. Im glad I took seans away!!!

I guess you could say chores=$=Cell phone.... Maybe lay it on the kids' shoulders and let them decide if it's really all that important??? For some kids' having a cell might just be a "hype" and once they have it and realize they have to work to keep it, they'll find it's not all that important. Or understand the value of a buck. I dunno. Maybe, too, it all depends on the kid/situation.

Haha, text messaging... 10k..... Almost sounds like you and me!! lol Since I've upped my text limit, I've had about a $40-$50 a month increase. And it was supposed to go DOWN that much!!
