I shouldn't be the one answering this, but, some people here seem to be gay. Modular means the same engine can be used in many applications.

Such as the 4.6L is basically the same in the Crown Vic, Explorer, and Mustang. I don't know what other Ford company companies (like Lincoln, etc) use it. It's just sort of like a "standard". The 5.4 is used in the F-150 and the Navigator and probably others.

Wow, thanks for the replies!??
I did actually search in encarta and google and i came up with pretty close to the above definition, i thought there may be more to it that's all.

It basically means its cheaper for ford because they can use the same engine components in all there cars.

If that's the only reason they call it modular--then the same could be said for the old 5.0 -- It was also used in every vehicle you just mentioned except the navigator...

the term "modular" was used for the parts being simular and interchangable. It had nothing to do with body style as it is an engine being called modular. Ford did this so they could make production costs lower to attain a higher profit margin. The overall design speaks for itself , as they have not had to replace it yet just improve it as it goes.

I agree with some of the above, especially the part about Ford being able to interchange parts, but I think it goes a little deeper than that. If memory serves me correctly. I'm pretty sure The Modular engine was made to be used in different applications, but also different displacements. The first 4.6 was essentially 2 - 2.3 liter blocks put together. The first ones even had 2 oil filters (one on each side). Also, that would allow 2 cylinders be chopped off the end to make a V6 and 2 cylinders can be added to make a V10 using basically the same block and tooling. I'm sure someone that has owned/followed Fords longer than I can provide more information. I do remember people saying the old Merc Marquis had 2 Topaz engines together and I know my brother had on with 2 oil filters.

Please correct me if my memory is totally shot...
