What dual resevior master cyl. will bolt onto my '65

I have a 1965 fastback with the big single resevior m/c. I have non-power original factory disk brakes. I did a couple of searches but didnt find any clear answer. Is there any dual resevior m/c that will bolt right up, no mods? The cheaper, the better. I just started grad school and am now very poor again.

I went to move the car a couple weeks ago and it had no brakes at all. It appears to be a leaking rear wheel cylinder. I never really noticed that it didnt have a dual resevior until now that it is empty. I have always been happy with the braking in the past. Seems I have to protect my investment from itself in the case of a leak in the system during travel.

I have been pleased with a disk conversion from Rod and Custom Motorsports out of South Carolina. The dual master bolted up without hassel. The product is good and less expensive than others I have compared to. There is a website.
 
The most recommended, common, dual master cylinder for early manual disc brakes is found in a 75'-80' Granada. The same was also used on a 75'-77' Maverick. It specs out to 15/16" bore which should work great since these cars are of similar weight and basic design as the Mustang. Ford was nice enough to not vary the MC mounting bolt location throughout the years so that is a non-issue.

I carted my Jelly Jar MC to the store, along with the Mustang brake line in order to get all the correct fittings. I also used the Mustang's original brake pushrod. The "big" reservoir (nearest the firewall on my MC) is the one for the front disc. Your original distribution Y and rear proportional valve can be used.

You should be able to find one through a local parts store (Pep Boys, Advanced), but it probably will need to be ordered in for such an old car. They come in various price ranges, but I recommend the Bendix unit for long life.
 
The "thingie" in the back of the stock Mustang brake system is not a prop valve, it is a residual pressure valve. They are necessary on all drum brake circuits and on disc circuits IF the MC is mounted below the calipers.

Factory disc brake setups for 67-70 did have a factory proportioning valve on them but it was mounted under the hood hinge near the MC, they were not the adjustable type so if you upgrade either the fronts or the rears you'll want an adjustable prop-valve somewhere (where depends on what got upgraded).

Hammer, get a dual reservior MC that is calibrated for drum/drum, not one setup for disc/drum. I cannot make a specific part recommendation though.

Buy a Rod & Custom kit. It's about $15 LESS than buying a Granada setup and all new rotors, bearings, calipers, seals, and lines, and includes stainless lines AND it uses the stock spindles to boot.:D A MC is only $20...I don't see why you're concerned. I'm a poor college student, and I know I'll go through 3 MCs, (4whlDisc, frontDisc, and 4whl Drum) so I saved up more $$$.:D
 
trevor, the 75 granada non power master cylinder is a bolt in for mustangs without power brakes.

hammer, you have two options here;

1: you can use a 67 drum/drum master cylinder, and swap to a disc/drum master cylinder when you swap to front disc brakes.

2: you can order up a set of brackets from www.scarebird.com and then use a 75 granada master cylinder.

No it won't because it is set up for disc. In your case, use one for a 67' manual drum brake car. I use the 65/66 push rod. You will also need some adapter fittings to match you 3/16" brake lines to the master cylinder.

To do this, you will need to separate the front brakes from the rear by either using the 67' style proportional valve OR by removing the rear line from the distribution and fit a plug in place of it OR removing the distribution block all together and using a Y connector for the front brakes. Of course the rear brake line will be connected directly to the MC.

A disc brake MC will be needed when you make the switch.

Who mentioned a "thingy?" If you are referring to my post you might want to study up more on the 65/66's disc brake cars. They also have an non-adjustable PROPORTIONAL valve located under the the hood hinge. The residual valve (looks like a Ford valve stem seal) resides in the jelly jar MC and is needed for the drum brakes. They do not have additional residual valves located downstream.

The 65/66 factory disc brake cars already have 2 separate brake lines going from the master cylinder to the front and rear brakes. Neither systems meet each other again after leaving the MC--they take entirely separate routes. Drum brakes use a single brake line which is later distributed to the front and the rear. Drum brake systems require more work when installing a dual MC.

In all actuality the stock disc brake proportional valve can be adjusted, BUT due to their age all you will get are leaks if you don't rebuild it first. Aftermarket ones are easier to deal with.

In LONN17's case, he should not have to worry with the proportional valve adjustmement as this swap has been done numerous times with great results.
