What exactly do coolant sensors control?

do they control anything such as spark timing and fuel management? or do they control just the fan. im trying to argue that the temperature of the coolant doesnt control timing/fuel amount. now, maybe im wrong, but i wanna know what these coolant sensors control. thanx!

when your engine is cold its in open loop in which your torque convertor wont lock up yet and it does run a bit richer ...once it warms to a certain temp.(forget where it is) it gos into closed loop and allows torque convertor to lock and leans it out a little so ...yes it does play a roll in how it runs
