my original theory was that oil was seeping up from the crankcase through the rings and into the cylinders and getting burned, but now i'm thinking that maybe it is really that the cylinder pressure is getting through the rings and forcing oil through the pcv and into the cylinders that way.

what's the real deal?

Yep, some of the air/fuel in the cylinders is forced past the rings and into the crankcase. The crankcase vents the crap back to the intake. It's just simple pressure delta elements goin on here.
