what fluid in T-5

doesnt matter what type you use! some will say this or that ! just make sure its automatic transmission fluid and not gear oil!!! Ive heard of people doing this and if you do you wont be able to shift gears!!!! any ATF fluid is good ! but if i was you id by the synthetic!

Careful not to confuse Tremec with the T5 (Borg Warner).

IIRC, the T5 recommends ATF for it (I agree - synthetic would be best).

Tremec used to recommend GM Synchromesh for their 3550 - not sure what they rec in their other trannies.

I used Redline MTL for a while, but its hard to come by and a little pricey. Now I run Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF, but I'm not convinced. It probably does the bearings and gears good, but syncro engagement could be a little more responsive, I think, as speed shifting is tough.

ATF NON-synthetic

Synthetic fluids are great and all, but sometimes they are not the best for an application. In a transmission, conventional fluid is more than adequate to cool the bearings and lubricate it. The problem with modern blocker ring transmissions is that they need some friction in order to shift. Using a fluid that's less slick sometimes lets the synchros grab better.

This is actually what tremec recommends as a band-aid on the 3650 which has 1-2 shift problems.

The t-5 was engineered for conventional ATF. If you want to run synthetic that's fine, but if your trans grinds occasionally, you may find that conventional fluid may fix the problem for you.

That's why i just tell people to run conventional ATF from the begnning...2.8 quarts.

That's what I've been considering. 2-3 grinds sometimes, and this is a (somewhat) freshly built trans. I just haven't gotten around to switching to conventional. I broke it in on conventional, then switched to synthetic, thinking it would do the trans good, but really the shifting has been sub-par since I went to synthetic. It's funny, because when I really jam it, it usually is fine, but when I lazily shift, it sometimes grinds. I think its because the lazy shifts don't force the syncros hard enough to really bite with the synthetic fluid.

I ran Valvoline conventional in my T5. I just pulled my transmission to fix a speedo gear and the fluid still looked brand new after two years. Guess what kind of fluid is going back in tonight, or Saturday?
