Why put limited slip additive in it? If it needed it, they would say to put it in. ATF all by itself is just fine.

limited slip additive knocks up the gl rating(yes atf has a gl rating to it) up a notch essentially your giving youself high end atf for cheap

Newb here, I find it amazing that a manual would actually use atf fluid. Amazing! My last daily driver - a Beretta gt 5 speed - used 5w30 in the manual trans! What gives?

Madmatt - most contemporary manuals now are specified with ATF - my wife's BMW's have used atf in the manual tranny since at least 1987. The T-5's we use should have atf in them. Funny, I've never heard of a tranny/transaxle that used engine oil - like your previous car. Before the switch to atf, most used 90 weight gear or rear end oil.

Thanks for the info Michael! Ive had a few older manuals but they used 80w90 gear oil. I figured that was the way it was! Yes, I was told by a few different GM guys that it used engine oil! Ive got a manual -let me check!

Ok, the Hane's manual is completely worthless if one is looking to know what the 5 speed Muncie trans uses. In the manual section of this book it brings you to Chapter 1 under fluid specifications. Then you will find that you need to consult GM for that priviledged info. Oh well. I guess I'll find out on Monday

there are several vehicles that use motor oil in the manual trans. saab 900's come to mind, as do the older hondas. i know there are many more, but the brain is vapor locked.

trannies are using smaller (i.e., needle) bearings and such these days, where lubricity is of concern. they are much more precise IMHO than the older (but more bullet proof??) trannies. they need the support of a thinner fluid, and people always complained about notchy shifting with cold 90 weight. its nice. in the old days, i used to have to let cars warm up before driving so i could shift. not so nowadays. i just worry about the water sloshing around in there when im nailing a 1-2 shift in the heat of summer.

most T5 don't liek the syn. atf's.. Not really sure why but they usally destory after using it..

What about syncrho-mesh, I ve had it in mine for over 2 years now and it seems nice and tight!!! Jiffy lube has it on tap so I just told them to put it in.

I use Mobil-1 ATF,

Felt a difference when I put it in,
I just did my clutch and I am trying out the Castrol Syntec Synthetic Formular this time,

Based on the posts, MANY T-5 users use synthetic with no ill effect; Amsoil syn atf in mine for at least 4 years.

ive been runnin redline d4 for a year (800 miles.LOL).

seems ok, but does it really frag the synchros, etc? ive read stuff like that about many things (i.e., redline killed my trans; mobil 1 killed my motor, etc). i usually dismiss it as a component that was on its last leg or a gorilla thought the "special fluid" gave it hulk-like qualities and grenaded it. but comin from you, i trust that. you know a heckuva lot more than i.

I would stick with Ford's recommendations or at least the majority before switching from OEM fluids. I'm no gambler

Deffinitly, your better off sticking with what Ford put in the trans back when it was produced on the assmebly line, which would be Mercon atf..

The question raised by Perky's comment seems to be synthetic atf's vs. non-synthetics. Ford doesn't specify one or the other - their specs call for mercon atf. The synthetic mercon atfs not meet, but in most cases exceed the specifications called for by Ford for the T-5.
