what gears to go with

im trying to decide what gears to go with. either 373 or 410s. i have gt40 heads, tfs1 cam, gt40 upper and lower intake, larger mass air, bbk shorties, catless h, mac exhaust. alum driveshaft, electric fan, 5 speed conversion also, king cobra clutch, and am a convertible. im running a 5 lug conversion with some 96 gt wheels. the tires are 245 or 255s i think. oh and i have 327's in it right now. and i do some highway driving. well actually most highway. i can get some ford racing 373's from a local shop for 100.

if your daily driving the 3:73's track 4:10's depends on you i guess! if it was me id go 3:73!

4.10's all the way. The differance between the two at speed is only a few hundred rpm any way. I checked it with the calculator on mustang works.
3.73s : 5th gear 76mph@2500rpm
4.10s : 5th gear 77mph@2800rpm
Do yourself a favor,spend the money once and get 4.10s.

really ? i thought it would be more of a difference! well if there that close i say 4:10's now i have 3:73 maybe ill be getting 4:10's now to! LOL

4.10s also benefit a lot if you have 17s and a decently meaty tire as that helps with the highway RPM's. I've had 4.10s on my car since i got it and it gets driven on the interstate just about every time i get it out...and i've only got about a 26'' tall tire.

I will say though that even if you have a track car, be careful when selecting 4.10s. Yes they'll get you better acceleration but if you're not set up to run slicks and you're not going to drive the balls off of it, AND if your engine stops making power before 6k, then you're wasting your time with 4.10s because you're only going to spin like crazy on street tires and your engine will run out of breath and you'll end up in 4th when you cross the line...running 4.10s means you need to be able to run higher RPMs.

On a typical street tire car with average power levels, 3.73s are going to give you a better ET for a couple reasons...1 because you won't blow the tires to pieces at the starting line, and 2 because you'll probably cross the line right around redline in 3rd unless you've got really short tires.

My car runs a measly 14.20 because i can't get it to hook for crap on street tires and it runs out of breath in the upper RPMs. My buddy's old coupe with less bolt ons than mine would trap around 4-5mph faster and about a half second faster than mine with 3.73s because he didn't spin as much off the line and didn't waste time shifting into 4th.

Of course this all doesn't apply to every car, that's just my experience.

Yep. My 4.10's roast the streeters and I'm puttin down 300rwhp. I picked up some D/R's and am hoping it helps some.

It won't launch for crap w/ street tires.

I have never got my 60 foot below 2.0 seconds, yet i still trap 99mph

3.55's

Perfect gear for a 5-spd. Especially one with decent mods. Steep gears are nice, but with a stick and some decent HP all you do is spin the tires. I usually say as your HP levels go up, your gear ratio should go down a bit.

So i would do 3.55's....3.73's tops with your car

if its mainly a street car i'd do the 373's. the 2.95 first gear in the t5. the final drive ratio or what ever its called when u multiply the gear ratio by the trans gear ratio would be 11.00....i've ready you want to be under 10 for a street car. the 410's would be over 12. if u do track it just get some 15" wheels for track tires an keep them under 26" an the 373's will be kickin on the street.

You said mostly highway so 3.55 max. which will work well with your 5 speed for performance.

That's my basic philosophy, unless we're talking about a dedicated 1/4 mile racecar.

Although, if i could afford a Viper spec T56 i would go with 4.30s! That way in 6th you'd get the advantage of double overdrive and that should bring the RPMs down to at least 3.73 range on the highway. Then you'd have a total animal in 1st-3rd and it would be nasty as hell on slicks at the track.
