What is An Air Silencer?

Hello all! Color me stupid, but what is an air silencer? I have read several posts that refer to K&N air intakes (or others), and say that they have removed the "air silencer". What is the advantage of this? Are there any negatives or potentially damaging side effects? I have a K&N CAI on my 1998 vert, and if it's worth it, I would like to know how to remove the silencer. Thanks!
