What is my exhaust? Help a Noob!

Hey guys, I just bought this 98 mustang gt
46k miles

It is a little loud... not too loud

But here is my concern

I just ordered the SLP loudmouth 1s...

this is my current exhaust set up that came with it..

can you help identify exactly what it is? Sorry if the pics dont help too much

and will the LM1s be much louder?

The mid pipe is the stock 6 catalytic converter H pipe.

The reason why it is louder then stock is because there are NO mufflers. If you got slp lm1s leave your cats on. Do not get an offroad mid pipe with lm1s it will sound like garbage.

why is it louder than stock?........let's see........Oh yeah, it doesn't have any mufflers! the mufflers have been deleted. as already mentioned, the h-pipe is stock. I would think that any brand of mufflers would be quieter than the way it is now.

it will sound different,not sure about louder.
+1 on keeping a catted h-pipe with the LM1's.
just installed them and i already had an o/r H.
it's LOUD!
may cat the h pipe.
or get some power flows.

the or pipes sound way to loud for me

but i dont mind the way it is now

i jiust figured the bigger piping from the full catback would give it a louder noise

Yeah, straight pipes are loud no doubt (and sound like ass to me). The LM1's wont be as loud but they'll give the exhaust a nice tone.

And to agree with everyone else, keep the catted H! LM1's sound HORRIBLE with an O/R midpipe.

When I bought my GT, it had that same setup (except the 99+ cars only had 4 cats). It actually didn't sound bad to be honest (but again, that's personal preference).

The SLP's might actually be louder. They are resonators that will magnify the sound... it was pretty bearable with the stock H and no mufflers just cruising around, but WOT it screamed like hell. The SLP's will be fairly loud all the time.

It probably won't sound bad though... as long as you keep the cats on.

You have no mufflers right now with the stock midpipe.

The slp1's are known for being the loudest catback/muffler because they are basically just a resonator. As other people have said leave the stock midpipe on or get a catted midpipe...that is, unless you are going for the dump-truck sound...

Any1 here have a opionion on a BASSANI CATTED x pipe with the SLp1s?

TOO Loud? Sound good? Worth it? I think I might be able to get it for 150 so thats the only reason i was thinkin about it

You are installing an aftermarket catted x-pipe with straight-through mufflers (small diameter) and you will definitely like the result. It will not be louder than stock but will be deeper than stock. MustangExhaust.com has sound clips that you might want to listen to, or, you might find clips on YouTube.

Use a floorjack and a piece of 2x4 to keep the x-pipe parallel with the floor of the car and this will help to seal the pipe connections to the manifold flanges. There are tons of threads here that describe how to install x-pipes and catbacks. Take your time and do it right. After a few driving cycles (cold to hot and back), check the fasteners are snug and that there are no exhaust leaks.

Enjoy the new hardware!

Agreed, but it will DEFINITELY be louder. Going from 6 cats to 2 cats is going to be a very noticeable change. Certainly bearable, and will definitely sound good, but will undoubtedly be louder than what you have now.

Here's one that's pretty much identical to what you're looking for.

The reason you aren't finding many videos of the Bassani X pipe is because Bassani is typically quite a bit more expensive than UPR or Pypes X pipes, and most people just go with the UPR or Pypes. Bassani, however, is VERY high quality, and if you found a catted Bassani X pipe in good condition for $150, you should jump all over it, even if for no other reason than to resell it for more than $150. A new Bassani catted X pipe goes for over $500.

Yes, you are correct about the reduced number of cats causing the sound volume to increasing. (1CeMaN, please pardon my slip-up. I honestly did not notice much change when I changed my stock intermediate pipe out but I still had my stock catback at the time. Maybe I should get my hearing checked.... ).

Can't comment on the LM1 as I went with a full Bassani X 2' 1/2" system with high flow cats and x pipe sounds fab to me! and top notch quality but I did pay almost $800 for the complete system from AM.

Before I had stock system with Flow-maters 40's with H-pipe but got fed up with the flow drone at 2k RPM but they sounded ok as long as you didn't do much freeway mileage.

I will put a post up on YouTube soon so people can hear them

I love my LM1's and they are on a stock H-pipe. I have some BBK LT's ready to go on, but I chose a catted H instead of an X or any form of offroad pipe because they make LM1's sound god awful, as previously stated.
