my temperature guage (mecahnical) is fluctuating between 192-202 after it has been running for twenty minutes of driving. it seems to like staying right around 200 most of the time but will dip back down occasionally to 192 or so. i have all stock cooling parts still and they likely need to be replaced just because of age. given the amount of mods i probably need a larger radiator too. can someone tell me what may be going on with my car or am i just paranoid about the fluctuation? also is it bad for the car to run as hot as 202? thanks for any help and suggestions!

Stock thermostat is 192 degrees. I still run the stock theromstat and my pro comp reads the same numbers. Shouldnt be any problems.

For real? Did you seriously have the motor (iron heads I assume) to 290*F?

Sodaking, don't sweat 202. The stock stat takes a bit to open (it does not slam open at its temp rating). Variances of system pressure and other variables can raise the opening threshold quite a bit (why balanced stats are good).

It sounds like your cooling system is doing fine (the temp fluctuations are likely from the stat having varying degrees of flow as it opens and closes a little). If 202 is as hot as it gets, that is pretty nice IMHO.

Good luck.
