WHAT KIND OF BRAKE PADS

mustang brakes suck, we all know this, rebuilding my brakes in a few weeks, unfortunately no 5 lug swap or big brake kit this time, just a simple, cheap rebuild and looking to throw some good brake pads in there and wanted your advice
are the expensive pads worth it and do they really make a noticable difference?
leaning to either the EBC pads or the HAWK plus pads, the more aggressive of the two street compounds, looking to put in a rarely driven street ride, want to see what you guys run, and what kind of rotor wear noise and squel you guys are getting

i have not used good pads, except on the bikes, so i have nothing to input there. i have been running carbon metallic pads on two cars and like them. they offer good performance and minimal brake dust, compared to other pads i have used. totally quiet too.

Hawks are supposed to be good stuff, as are EBC..... probably cant go too wrong.

There are no magic pads that are going to make a huge difference. The Hawks and EBCs Green Stuff would help I am sure. Be aware that the race pads are desgined to work at high temps, which is great for racing but would be wose than regular pads on normal driving. The better pads, like tires, will wear down faster, but that's no big deal, who cares about brake pad wear when your heading towards something and need to stop.

Have the rotors machined or better yet, get new ones and break the new surfaces in correctly, makes all the difference.

I got a set of auto specialties brake pads from summit. They are nothing outrages, didn't cost much more than the top sets at the parts store I just ordered them because I was getting some other stuff at the time and figured what the hell I need new pads anyway. They have worked well in the year I have had them on. They are dead quiet and no dust (which is a big deal for me since I still have turbines on my car).

tell me about it. i cant keep those things clean!! i had a grease cap pop off once and im still trying to get grease out of the crevices near the hub.

Oh man tell me about it. When I first got my car I swear I tried every wheel cleaner known to man and nothing worked very well. Then I found a bottle of Eagle One etching mag cleaner made for rough cast alloy wheels. It comes in a black bottle. This stuff will actually clean a turbine!!!! (It could probably peel paint off of a battleship to though so if you have your calipers painted I don't recommend it.) But otherwise it is amazing I just spray it on let is set a mintue and when I hose it off I have clean turbines again. If it has been a while between cleanings I might use an old tooth brush in the tight spots, but it works with very minimal effort. Try it out is makes the turbines much easier to deal with. LOL your turbines must not have been that bad, I had some turbines that would not come clean even with that eagle one stuff, i even used that stuff and a brush but they were still dirty, so I just said the hell with it and bought new wheels.

Yeah, the thing I hated most about turbines is they were so hard to clean. Not to mention that even when clean they were butt ugly and screamed MULLET.

Brakes..

I use the VGX Stealth Metallic from Summit, and they works just fine. ..and NEW brake fluid ! ..the B.fluid
is not expencive, so I change it every second year.
Think the B.fluid Quality is one of the reasons for bad brakes on
our Fox cars, together with glass polished breake pads.. Just Me

I had EBC green stuff pad on one of my other cars and they were great, no dust, no noise just really good stuff. the down side is they were about $100 for the set. If you do get the EBC's you really have to bed them in, at first they will not stop. I think I am going to get the EBC'S or the hawks for my stang

Ceramic is the best all-around material you can get. Alot of people are too concerned with these high performance brake pad companies that charge more for the pads than a shop will for a brake job all-around. Raybestos is a good company and always has been. If you go with something from an auto store, don't even consider the organic, semi-metallic are the ones with all the dust and especially the noise, but ceramic have the best of all worlds. It isn't necesarrily the maker of the pad but rather the materials used

Porterfield brake pads....I think E4 Race.
I was really surprised at the difference. I think it was 300 bucks for front and rear...been 4 years, same brakes, but only 25K miles. As close to droppin anchor as you can get on stock rotors / drums!

Jason, i seem to connect you with mullet comments. do you have nightmares about 3rd gen camaros with turbines, which are rolling on a dyno made from a tractor trailer axle?

My father has been in autoparts for over 30 years and recommends the premium pads from Carquest. I have used them for years and always worked great.

lol man that is hardcore mulletude there HISSIN. I actually like the turbines myself I run raised white letter BFGs on mine and am keeping my cheese grater tail lights as well. To me the wheels that scream Mullet are drag lites on a street driven car! ( I know alot of people here are gonna wanna kill me for that)

Buy some performance black ceramic pads from PepBoys or Advanced Auto(I forget the brand name). I have them on both my Mustang and Expedition, no more brake dust and I feel much better braking, especially on the Expedition.

Having Road Raced my stang for several years I've tried pretty much everything out there. For the street/strip get the Hawk HP+, they are the best bang for the buck.

I had those hawk pads on my car for about a year. Everyone who says they dont dust, must be blind or something. Those things dust like crazy. If i took my car for a 20 min rip, getting the brakes moderatly hot, My freshly cleaned chrome rims would have a layer of dust on them. If that wasnt bad enough after about 10,000 km's they started to squeel worse then a city bus. I put up with this squeeling for like a month before it started driving me crazy.

Now I run Bosch Premium Ceramic Pads. No noise, virtually no dust and they stop just as good as the hawks.
