My daughter wrecked her 93' convertable yesterday. I'm trying to see what all I can salvage and I was thinking I had heard that the 2.3 AOD cars had 3.73 gears. Did the 4 bangers come with an 8.8 of just a 7.5?

BTW...anybody need any convertable parts? Im going to part the car out. It got hit on the front driver side.

4 bangers all have 7.5s, and i believe the ratio is the same as the automatic V8 cars, which is a 3.27, but you still cant use that gear in an 8.8.

I was afraid it was a 7.5. I was kind of hoping I could just swap the complete rear into my 86. Anybody know what code I need to check to verify the ratio?

There should be a tag attached to the differential cover by one of the bolts. Get the numbers off that and do a search here. I'm not 100% sure, but i think it's either the first 3 digits or the last 3 that are the ratio. If you have the cover off the differential, it should be stamped on the outer edge of the ring gear. if not, count the teeth on the ring gear and the pinion, then divide the teeth on the ring gear by the teeth on the pinion, this will give you a ratio also.

Explain.....your saying that you can use a 7.5" ring gear in an 8.8" ring gear rear end?! Or am I totally missing what you are saying here?

See the part that says "still CANT use this gear in an 8.8"? I'm not sure about the gear ratio but i know for sure a lot of V8 automatic cars came with 3.27s. But just to clarify, you can not use a 7.5 gear in an 8.8 axle, at least not in any way that i'm aware of...

There are only 2 4-banger rear end gear options...not including the turbo cars (SVO and Turbo GT)

Automatics (A4LD) got 3.73's

5-spd's got 3.45's

No other options.

ALso, MOST 5.0's came with 2.73's. If you got a 5-spd you could get optional 3.08's if you got an AOD, optional 3.27s....but the vast majority of cars got 2.73's

My bad, I read it as CAN. I thought you had found some new way to strech a 7.5" gear out to 8.8
