Im putting my shortblock together right now and im unsure what ring goes on top. I have a set with a dot and a angled inside edge, and a set that is identical on both sides. Which one goes nearest to the top of the piston?

Dude, your scaring me. I read all you posts just now. Maybe while the block was at the machine shop you should have had them assemble the entire thing.
I know about end gap and all that, I dont know which ring goes where. In the hastings box it says the dot faces up, so I know what way the ring is supposed to be facing but I dont know wether it goes on the top or middle ring spot.

NM I think I got it. But if anyone wants to answer anyways to confirm what I found, feel free. Are rings supposed to be that loose after you put them on the piston? They like streched when I used the ring installer...
I'm going with Vib on this one and I'm scared. This is gonna be an interesting first start. I don't want to sound like a dick but we're talking about your shortblock here, you can't just **** it up and fix a little something. If you can't even get your rings on correctly, hows the rest of the motor going. What rings are you using and whats your end gap at?

Depending on what rings you have, the chrome outer edges go on top. Yes the rings are very loose on the piston.
I assume you have a book? The "How to rebuild the small block Ford" is a execelant book to have while rebuilding a engine. I have used it everytime I have rebuilt a engine. It helps since I don't rebuild engines all the time.

Dont worry guys, I got this under control.... Ive been checking all clearances and EVERYTHING! So far so good, today the shortblock WILL be done.
