what spark plug gap

I have a 89LX 302 and all the parts stores say the plugs get gapped at .054 but the haynes manual says .045. I am burning rich right now and my plugs definitely show it. I gapped the last set of plugs at .045. But I am curious now if I should be gapping them at .054. Anyone out there know what they should be gapped at?

Split the difference and call it 0.054"



The early Mustangs use the 0.045" gap, and a lot of refernces call this gap for all 79-93 mustangs.
