Michael Yount said:With a little experimentation, you can sort of get a feel for what it was like by shifting without using the clutch at all. Wind first out to about 2500 rpm, then when you ease off the gas pull it out of first (no clutch), and just apply steady pressure into second. When the gear and engine speeds match, it'll lightly 'clunk' into the next gear. You should be able to do that all the way through the gears. Same is true downshifting - but you have to blip the throttle in neutral and then apply a little force into the next lower gear. When the engine speed is dropping back down from the 'blip', as soon as the engine and gear speeds match, it'll drop into the next lower gear. It works better on higher mileage trannys where the gears/synchros have lots of wear on them.

Yep. I used to have a '73 fullsize Blazer with an SM465 4-speed...with the granny gear. I have a steel plate and a bunch of screws in my left ankle, so when I got tired of using the clutch, I just wouldn't. Michael Yount said:blackgt - you've got it backwards. THe synchros do more work when shifting with the clutch. Thats because its the rings that synchronize speeds and allow gears to mesh. Without the clutch you have to let the speeds match and then the gears can mesh. The synchros do very little work when shifting without the clutch.
Now I don't have a manual nor do I have a lot of experience with one so I may be missing something but how do you know when the tranny and engine speeds are the same to put it in gear. Especially on the downshift where you said you have to tap the gas quick to get the revs up to the same speed as the transmission.Michael Yount said:yup - if you don't match the speeds just right it will either grind, or not go in at all.
