What timing pointer

I recently switched from my stock early '65 timing cover to the FRPP universal cover so that I could switch to a driver side water pump. I really don't feeling like spending $80 on a stupid billet pointer. Does a stock pointer off a late model 5.0 work on this? Is there something I can fab up in the appropriate timing pointer price range (<$15)?

Thanks,
Trevor

Couldn't you have just got a 69 or later 351 water pump ? I thought those were the same bolt patern as 289/302 pumps and had drives side exit ? Which water pump are you using now ?

From what I remember, the Ford Racing timing chain cover that they sell now is the "short pump" style. Same pump they used on the later model Explorers ? The problem is, those water pumps are reverse rotation. If you use that, it wont work with the vbelt setup.

That better not be the case - I spent about $150 on that stupid timing cover. This is one of those times I wish I had a chevy.

Anyway, I bought a 1970 waterpump to go with a passengerside outlet griffen radiator that I purchased. When I went to install the pump I found the cast in timing pointer interfered w/ the assembly. I didnt want to hack off the pointer so I bought the FRPP universal cover. It said it works w/ all models and still gave me the option of front dipstick and mech. fuel pump.

For a short time I searched for a used pass-side pointer timing cover but everyone I found looked beat or broken and I didnt want to have a timing cover be my holdup.

Any Idea on the pointer?

Thanks,
Trevor

Does the pump you got fit the timing cover ? Take a picture of the timing cover. I think you should be able to get one from a junkyard. The timing pointer bolt holes were the same measurments and location on the late model 5.0 as they were on the 289/302. I think you can just use one from those.

Can you return the timing cover ? I would recomend using an Edlebrock pump because it uses an actual impeller to move the water around instead of some stupid little fin type assembly. For the price of that timing cover I bet you can get a water pump.
