I am pretty excited. I bought 2 turbo short blocks with heads, 1 turbo, and a 86 Ranger with a failed timing belt for $200.

I need to know what to check the short blocks/heads for when doing an inspection.

All of the motors do have a ridge at the top of the bore. I assume this is normal? How high is this ridge supposed to be?

I know that the heads are prone to cracking. Where does this usually occur?

Is there anything in the bottom end that I should look for that would be different from a windsor motor? These will be my first 2.3L breakdowns.

thanks for any advice.

Sounds like a pretty good deal! The bottom ends are nearly indestructable! Most guys don't have much of a ridge, at all (even with high miles). Are you gonna rebuild or just slap it into something? If rebuilding, have a machine shop check the cylinders for out of round and taper. If they're within tolerances, new rings and bearings and button it up. If not, go with the smallest overbore possible.

The head tends to crack in the combustion chamber between or on either side of the valves. Clean it up and check real close. If it's a minute crack, alot of guys are running the cracked head with no problems at all! Get a shop manual for your motors or at least a Chiltons.

as far as the ridge goes, for every .001 you open the bore you gain 3.141 on ring end gap so a .010 wear in the block translates to 31.4 of ring gap on top of stock specs

quick check is if you can"click" a finger nail over the ridge ,it needs bored
