What to do about the rims?

I need to either get a new narrower rear end.....(too much money), or get new wheels.

My current American Racing S-200's combined with 225/60/15's are rubbing in the rear even after I cut 1/4" from inner lip of quarter panel.

So, on my 67 coupe......should I run the 15x7 Magnum 500's or 15x7 Styled Steels?????

I am leaning toward the magnums because I like the look of them way better than styled steels.....BUT, I realize they will stick out like a sore thumb as they were not put on 1967 Stangs.

What to do????

Why not keepyour aftermarkets and go to a 65 series tire? You could also stay with a 60 series but go slightly smaller. Just a thought.

Any chance you could get a 1/4" machined off the mounting surface of the wheels? Provided of course you have enough material.... this will increase your backspacing.

Are you sure that your springs and shocks aren't shot? Those tires should have plenty of room unless you have the wrong rearend to begin with.. I use 245/60/15 with 15x8 Torque Thrust IIs on my 66. The 67 can handle a much larger tire than the 66, with its bigger wheel wells.

I have 300 miles on my COMPLETE REBUILD...therefore it is not the shocks or springs...they are brand spankin new.

I cannot safely machine the rims....that comes from my dad (engineer) and the company.

I am running 60 series tires. 225/60/15's.


Torque thrust 11's must use a better backspacing.....the torque thrust and S-200 only have 3 3/4" backspace....which limits tire size to 205 from what I have read.

maverick rearend or 65-66stang rear end will work. they are about 1 3/4" shorter than a 67. this is what i'm using with a 275/50/15 on a 15x8 rim and with the rear i can fit a 15x10

It's all about the backspacing!

You should be able to run a 17x8 in the front with a 4.5" backspace and 245x45 tire and in the rear you can run a 17x9 with a 5.5" backspace and a 275x40???

What is the diameter width and backspacing on your wheels?

I am using 15x7 American racing with ONLY 3 3/4" backspace with my 225/60/15 tires...........they rub!

Check your axel to axel measurement!
This may be your problem!
Does anyone have the correct measurement available?

If not, consider selling them and get some rims designed specifically for your car!

It is the original 8" rear end.

Yes, I intend to buy new rims. Or, build narrower 9" rear end.

Hey dude.... I'm also a design engineer. A quarter inch of material will not make a difference in the wheel strength provided there is enough material in the first place. It really depends on the rim design. And because I'm not familiar with your rim, I won't say it's a certainy. But it is an option if you care to investigate it.

yeah 225 60 15 will rub sometimes (ever car is slightly different) without rolling your fender lips on a 3.75 rim - what rear brakes are you using?
Be sure to check out my wheel charts linked in the sig to get a VERY good idea of what rim, what BS and what tire will work with your specific combination of suspension and braking parts.

just buy my 14x6" polished bullet hole rims with 205/70 kelly chargers for $200 and be done with it!!!

All of there s-200, and most torque thrust in 15x7 have the stupid 3 3/4" BS!
