Guess there's no such thing as a catted "H" mid pipe for a '98 so how is the sound with a Magnaflow catted "X"? Did you do headers too? I need some more for this *****. I have the MagnaPacks but need to finish the exhaust. Next year is going to be a transformation for my '98. I'm tired of running slow... I know the power for a '98 can be there if I can just find the right combo. Money is starting to flow.

No, it's a fine idea, you just won't reap the benefits as much as you would with a '99-up without the head swap (and intake if you decide to use a centrifugal blower). Swapping the heads on a '96-'98 bumps the compression ratio up into the 10.4:1 range. This combined with the already sub-par strength of the stock bottom end doesn't exactly make them ideal for supercharging after the swap. But you'll still turn out decent numbers without....just not as good as a '99-up.

thanks brian, i didn't feel like typing all of that

I'm running FRPP 3.73's, K&N and Flowmasters on my '98 'Vert. I just ordered a MGW shifter last night for the pig so at least the fun to drive quotient has risen significantly since I acquired it. Since I have 100k on mine, I'm planning mostly mods to the vehicle itself and steering away from the engine. I will add headers, midpipe and catback though as these can be used when I decide to rededicate money into the powerplant. I just want everything else good to go when it comes time to acquire a new powerplant built as bulletproof as possible to accommodate either a twin turbo setup or supercharger. I'll be looking for 450+rwhp when the beast is completed like I want it in the next couple of years.

you don't want 4.10's with a blower.

from a 98 person, if you were to do a headswap and a 100 hp shot personally i would be pissed if i weren't in 11's

A good way to go if your set on a blower is swap in PI intake and PI cams on your stock heads, this will make around 35rwhp pretty cheaply on an NA car and even more with boost. Also it leaves your CR nice for the huffer. with a blower and the PI intake and cams you will see numbers a little lower than a blown 99+ car. but you will still be very happy.

the first "bolt -on" stuff you can use no matter what route you decide you go, is: a shifter, exhaust (a midpipe at least) after that decide if you want to stick with na, spray or blower, and go from there.

That setup would cost almost as much as a Vortech S/C system but give you half the horses. Best bang for the buck is the PI headswap, you can usually find used heads and intakes cheap. For starters I recommend a K&N FIPK, they seem to work well in the non-PI cars. It gave me a nice SOTP feel and approx. 10 rwhp on the dyno. Good luck.

One question... I would really like a SC in the future, and now that I have seen people are doing the intake swap without plates... Has anyone run a PI intake with non-pi heads and boost (8, 10 #'s) ??? I am afraid it might leak since it doesn't line up.

Thanx

One guy here (Mr Jones?) did run a Vortech with a PI intake w/plates on his son's '98 GT non-PI engine. According to him it worked well but it was running lean at 5000+ rpm's. He said it needed bigger injectors and a matching MAF. I would recommend a PI intake WITH plates if you plan to go FI in the future, since there will be a lot of turbulence without the plates. I plan to do a similar setup real soon so I'll keep you all posted.

What's the biggest tire you can run on these cars? I have a few sets of extra rims, biggest being 17x10.5 that I run on my cobra with 315/35/17's and some 17x9's.. What should I get for the GT for a big, stick tire?

Being that your track has a density alt. of -1244ft below sea level [ ] , yes you should see 11's

i agree, i don't have plates, but if i were to use forced induction, i would probibly use plates for that reason.

Thank god for long winded know it alls like me, huh. Didn't mean to overshadow your post. I actually didn't see it. One thing about being long winded, is that in the time it takes you to type all of that crap out, one or two people usually answers the question ahead of you in the mean time.

That's a little light at 8-10psi, don't you think. Even through a stock NPI longblock? I would have guessed another 20-30 on top of that?

Sorry I didn't mean to laugh, but you're really loving that new track altitude conversion calculator you found, aren't you?

Ok, that's what I've been leaning towards.. especially since Livernois is in my backyard

So, a PI intake with adaptor plates on non- pi heads with blower cams would work nicely with an S-trim then hun'!?
