What would a dealership consider abuse?

My 2011 mustang is at the dealership getting a tranny problem fixed and the service manager called me to give me sort of a disclamer. He said they're going to have to take the tranny out to look at the clutch and slave cylinder and all this is under warranty but if they find out that the tranny has been abused that the work isn't under warranty anymore and it'll cost $600-700 to put the tranny back in. He said that he dosen't see signs of abuse but they won't know officially untill tonight. I never did a burnout, never launched at really high rpm's, i only drive it really hard every now and then. Could that cause what they would call abuse or should I have nothing to worry about?

Dude, if they wanted to they could make anything look like 'abuse.' You're not privy to their criteria, you're not there to see what they assess. I mean, abuse can be clutch-slipping burnouts, high RPM launches, drifting, missing shifts like hell, improper maintenance( which a 2011 shouldn't even need driveline maintenance yet), unapproved modifications or crappy private workmanship on those mods, or abuse can mean the heavy footed but smooth shifting driving that I do every day. It's all subjective, best bet is to be cool with them and since its a new car hopefully they won't break your balls. When I look at a car for abuse, one of the first places I go is the rear wheel wells. If there is all kinds of rubber up in there, somebody's been cooking the hides and beating the car. If the clutch looks like it's been getting dumped at 4k they will see it too, but again, it's all in what they consider 'abuse.'

Thanks for the reply, I never really thought of that but thats a great point. The thing that worries me the most is that I'm only 19 and that could really go against me. I've been going to the same dealership for the last 2 years and they don't seem shady at all so hopfully I'll be good.

tell the dealer this, the 2011 5.0 i test drove showed 38 miles when i test drove it, but those 38 miles i bet were pretty hard. the dealer that went me drove it out the lott then we switched places, he made a remark saying you drive it as you like, found a on ramp to i-90 . its a auto tranny, florred it about 35 to 90mph just like that, very good power, did about 10 more high speed moves, he looks at me when iam done , he says good job, you rank up there, lol. i would have bought the car but when i noticed it looked like it had scrape marks on the sills, looked like it had been drove very hard, the 38 miles. if they scrwew you i will not buy one.

All signs of abuse will be on the outside of the tranny. I work at a honda dealership and you guys wouldnt believe what these kids are doing to the newer si's, most of the time it will show up in the clutch area ive seen flywheels all sorts of bright colors heat cracks you name it, if you know you dont abuse it and they claim you do id ask to see the proof and then call ford directly.

Abuse is driving a new 5.0 like a 90 year old would drive an '85 Corolla.

I agree. Unless you are dumping the clutch at high revs, power shifting, and the other stuff the above posters said, you better have nothing to worry about. You did not buy a Corolla, and they won't expect it to be driven that way. You should be fine.

Short of drag racing it every night, how could anyone possibly "abuse" a 2011 Mustang enough to require service at this point? The car's only been out for like 3 months!
