What would cause this?

Hey guys I recently had a battery put in my car and I noticed some burning smell. Well tonight my batt. guage dipped once again so i popped the hood when it was dark and I see this bright orange glow. Oh was like oh **** as I see the big wire going into the back of the alternator is really orange and hot. Im not sure which wire it is I just know it is in the back of the alt and is fairly big.


Anyways, what would cause it to burn like that and kill my power? Im taking it in tomorrow, will i need a new Alt? Help guys. Thanks

What else is it connected to? Does it bolt to the chassis?

Could be a loose connection. Loose connections cause more power consumption and a arcing hot condition. I would check your connections to make sure they're tight.

wow, that doesn't sound good at all

carefull with the battery, it could possibly explode, I would take it to a shop if the wire is glowing, It is most likely a ground, or bad connection somewhere

Yea, It has me worried to drive it now, but ive been smelling it for a week now and couldnt find the problem to save my life. Im taking it in tomorrow so I hope it gets me there safe. The connection looked like it was rubbing the alt. bracket, but the whole thing is melted and about ready to fall off. Scary to say the least.
