What's a fair price to swap gears?

I'm really eager to change my gears out to a 3:73. A respectable local shop quoted me the labor would be $450 if I supplied the ring/pinion/shims/bearings.

Does this sound right? Kinda caught me off guard - about $600 plus?

I had mine done for $400. shop around because a lot of guys on here have gotten it done cheaper, but i think 400 is average

Paid about $600 for FRPP gears, install kit, new clutch plates, Mobil 1 diff. lube, and labor.

I was quoted $250 with me supplying parts , turned into about $400 since I also swapped axles/diff too and needed new axle bearings then.

ditto on you sob's and cheap labor

i checked another trans/gear shop in jax and he wanted $800....

maybe I'll focus on a mid pipe, pleneum and tb for now.

cmon guys, no mechanic friends??

talk to some local mechanics at a ford dealership or something, ask them if they do jobs on the side. This is how i get some of my things done, if i decide I dont have the time to do them.

They usually charge half of what a shop will for me, but may be im a smooth talker

I think some of the difference is due to the gear themselves...ford racing gears are cheaper because there is a shortcut to setting the correct backlash if I remember correctly

Ha that happened to me too! Ran the proce tag up a bit more but worht it to have a new rear end

If your gonna go for it might as well go all the way. That rear should handle anything I throw at it now

that's where I've ended up and will consider it a rear end re-build ready for the next 50K miles,
