what will happend if i just pull out my power steering pump but still use the rack... far as long term effects on my steering??? i cant afford a manual rack right now but the PS is shot!!!! Would it be ok to drive with it like this??
i think....it will be pretty hard to drive. it will be like turning the wheel with the car off, like it is now...not fun. those components are supposed to run with fluid..w/o they are pretty stubburn. i dont think you will break anything however.
When you say the P/S is shot, what is it doing? If your getting no power assist it is more likley the rack. If you want to go manual rack, but not the actuall rack yet, I would pull the pump and drain as much fluid out of the rack as possible so you won't have to push the fluid in the rack. If the rack is still good, running it w/o fluid might eventually wear it out since the fluid does lube it.
