with 4.10's and bfg drag radials i have lowered my best 60' by .2 and my average times went from running consistant 14.50's in good weather to 14.1's in very crappy weather (both times i've been out with them has had 80+% humidity)
best time went from 14.30 on one freak run on a perfect day 65* 60% humidity
to a best of 14.08 on a CRAPPY 80* 89% humidity
tires & gear are the single biggest mods to cut good track times.
From what I've heard and gathered from driving 4:10s, they really do rocket you off the line. The shifts seem to be a lot harder too, but maybe its my imagination. It will really wake up your car, and most likely youll have to adjust your whole driving style. My friend tells me though that when he gets farther down the track they seem to kinda hold him back and the shifts lag a little bit. Like the engine is starting to get out of the power band too much before his car shifts. Who knows though, it might just be his car?
I hear a lot of weird responses like "they get you into your powerband faster." Okay, but that same line of thought will also mean they'll take you out of it faster as well.
I think the best way of describing what a higher gear ratio will do is to say it gives your engine a greater mechanical advantage over accelerating the car. Think of it as trying to break a bolt loose with a little 6 inch long wrench, then trying it with a 3 foot long breaker bar.

I really enjoy my 4.10s. They really woke up my car, which is a convertible automatic. It accelerates much faster, though it does run at higher rpms down the freeway. Think of a 5-speed bicycle. 4.10s are comparable to 1st or 2nd gear while 3.23s are like 4th or 5th gear. From a dead stop, which gear provides a better mechanical advantage?
