Hi everyone, Im new here and totally new to Ford and mustangs. Im selling my 6er soon and need a cheaper to maintain/fun car.

Im in the market for a 6cylinder stang and would really like to know what the acceleration is like.

Does anyone know the 0-60 and 1/4 using a 5spd manual trany?

Also, how is the handling at the limit?

What are the common upgrades for these 6 cylinders and how much do they usually cost?

Good choice in chosing a manual tranny.5 spd's have slightly better 0-60 times than autos.Just depends on how well you can shift.Invest in a shorty shifter handle and you can get even better. Now,i'm not totally positive, but I do know the 0-60 times on 94-98 V6's are between 7 and 8 seconds.Just depends on the person driving. The 99-04 V6's have slightly better times as Ford re-tuned the entire intake and it gained a good 30+ HP.

As for 1/4 times...I don't know.Your best bet would be to keep a tab on this post and see if anyone replies. There are many knowledgeable people on these forums so there will always be someone that will offer an answer.

Another thing you should seriously try is.....Search the forums. If you scroll up all the way, then look slightly lower than half screen, you'll see a blue bar with forum options and other links. At the right side you'll see a search option. You'll find tons of info relating to your search.

And since your in the market for a V6,you didn't specify whether you were interested in buying used or new.If used,What is your price range? If your on a real budget, you can get a decent 94-98 V6 anywhere in the line of $2k to $7k depending on how well the car has been taken care of and if the person has modded it.And yes, some modded V6's dont come cheap. But,I would definately stay way from 94 & 95 V6's.They have many issues in many areas mostly due to the fact 94's were the first year of the new body style following the Fox Body.So being new, they have problems. But,if you can deal with these, many times though if the car was well maintained then you wont have any problems at all.

As for handling,They are more agile than a Fox Body stock but not as good as some of those imports out there.I'm not ripping on Stangs and I never would because I love these cars.I can only comment on 94-98 styles as I never owned any of the newer 99 and up styles.Typically,I wouldn't reccomend going any faster than 60 mph around a long 45 degree turn as body lean becomes very pronounced then (And this is assuming all suspension components are in top shape). I'd highly reccomend upgrading the struts/shocks and springs.Even a 1" drop with Eibach springs can get very noticeable reduction in body lean.Add KYB or Konig Strut/Shocks,I am looking into a set of adjustable ones but also they are a bit pricey. But then the payoff is well worth it.I havn't tested them myself, but as to what i've heard, they can vastly improve handling. But the drawback is a slightly stiffer ride.Which isn't too bad in 6's.Just has that noticable jiggly feel hitting bumps.

Go take a look at Http://www.tirerack.com

And again, try searching the forums here for additional info.Maybe someone knows something better than this.

I tried posting earlier but the site was messing up giving me errors saying Stangnet.com URL was not found. Shrugs

No problem at all.

By the way.you may also want to look into performance tires.Wider, lower profile tires on a 16" - 18" rim makes a world of a difference in traction and cornering.Check'em at the Tirerack.Good thing is you can get allmost any tire size for any size rim (Allmost..being realistic here). They ship in 1 week.

The only thing I would have against getting bigger tires is the fact that V6 only have 150hp. This is relevent because I might get some understeer and or bog down the engine while trying to accelerate too much on grippy tires. I had this problem with my old 633. I just dont want to stress the engine and or get understeer at the limit.

Depends on which year your getting, I don't think you stated it. The 99+ V6's have 190hp stock I think and the 05's stock just for your info have 210hp.

As far as the hp i have seen from factory sheets they come with about 173 hp but with some simple modifications you can easily catch back up to the 99+ mustangs. The 99+ are actually 3.9/4.0 engines so they are gonna come wiht a lil' bit more hp. performance tires will not really hurt you unless you are trying to power brake and burn the tires other wise it's just going to give you grip just like when you floor it sometimes wiht regular tires and it doesnt slip it is just a grippy start. this being said thinking about usual performance tires for daily road use and some race use.

My wife's 99 Stang ran 15.3's@91 a long time ago and hit 0-60 mph I'll guess in the high 6 second range.

Basically stock and it handles ok.

i dont completely agree with all the stats given here about the 94-98 v6s. from what i am aware of they came stock with around 150hp and 0-60 times nearing or in the 9's. the 99+ come stock with 190hp as mentioned and your lookin at mid 15 sec 1/4 mile times(on avg w/ a 5spd) and low 7sec 0-60 times. for refference a guy on another forum ran a 15.06 in a stock auto 05 v6

the difference in the 94-98 and the 99-04 v6s is that the earlier styles have a single port intake. ford changed it to a split port intake in 99 adding about 40 crank hp.

as for mods most people start off with a cold air intake, dual exhaust, and new tires/rims(17" is most popular). for a good(fairly cheap) performance boost most people reccomend getting faster gears like 3.73s(more popular for 5spd) or 4.10's(faster accel but lower top end and worse gas mileage) and tlok(traction lock differential, allows both wheels to spin and adds much more traction)

on another note i dont know why your so concerned about how the car performs at the limiter. these cars are limited at 115mph and i dont really know what kind of driving youd be doing at that kind of speed that would really test the cars handling ability. if you do plan on driving at that speed i suggest looking into new suspension and better brakes.

good luck with the stang

When I say "handling at the limit" thatmeans, How does it handle just before it loses traction? Does it snap spin on you or is it a well balanced car?

hahaha whew. id say they handle fairly well. i mean theyr RWD and you can break the rear end loose if you want to and it will corner decently. theyre not amazing stock but that can be changed with some suspension mods

As for quarter mile times you should look somewhere in the mid to high 15's even low 16's depending on the driver. I'm not knocking on the 3.8, cause I have an '01 myself, but they are just plain underpowered if you are looking for a baseline to mod from. I was thinking about an engine/tranny swap on mine in a year or 2 but as long as SVT comes through with the GT 500 cobra I'll be buying one of those. Just my 2 cents.

common mods would be CAI~200, catback~400, h or x-pipe~250-500, headers~300-alot, throttle body~200, intake plenum~200, pulleys~200.

these are just your basic bolt ons but for serious power look into heads, superchargers, etc. which are gonna be quite expensive + lots to install unless you can do it yourself.
