I noticed they sell tfis for automatics and manual transmissions. I have one for a manual on my car(and it's an automatic) and didn't know if that would affect performance or not. What's the difference between them?

ok u mean the ignition control module on the dist. and i dont know what the difference is but i just replaced mine like an hour ago. ok by the way heres a really funny story bout when i was replacing it...

so im out there replacing the icm or tfi or whatever you want to call it, and my heads under the hood and all of a sudden my car jumps at me and damn near knocks me over! yea im not joking...
so i look and some stupid ass asian bitch (no offense) had backed into my car!!!! remember im in a ****in apartment parking lot and i had just said hi to her as she walked by so she ****in knew i was right there, so it was kinda unbelievable!!
well long and short she had a huge dent and my ****ed up paint all over her bumper. luckily my car is all ****ed up on the outside so i didnt care at all. so i acted all bummed out and said she ****ed up my car and made her give me $100. haha im a hustla!
sorry had to tell that story!

so yea i dont know what the diff is but when i got it at kragen the guy asked if it was auto or manuel so it does make a diff but im not sure what.

I've only ever seen that in aftermarket performance ones, never in a 'normal' replacement one. Not sure of any other differences, but I understand you can put a manual one in an automatic, but if you put an automatic one in a manual you won't be able to push-start it.

I remember when I had to replace mine the guy at the parst store ask me if it was an auto or manual and I couldn't understand why that would matter. I want to say they ask me the same question when I bought a new TPS sensor also but I may be mistaken that was a while back.

The manual TFI is made to do push starts. It changes the dwell when it senses the engine is being turned over very slowly.
